Mine's been 'almost passable' for what little youtubing i've done lately. Can't say it's gotten worse, at least..

If you have access to your own DNS client/server (on your router or a hosts file for example), could you try

server=/youtube.com/208.67.222.222
server=/l.google.com/208.67.222.222
server=/1e100.net/208.67.222.222
server=/googlevideo.com/208.67.222.222

And test performance?

Is this just with the flash videos or does it happen with the beta html5 videos too?

For me is with the Flash videos - I haven't seen a HTML5 video there I think.

I tried this when it was posted several weeks ago in another thread and noticed no differeance at all.

Some clips stream OK, others are terrible. 720p HD is impossible.

Here we go... I posted this blog entry about the whole "YouTube on TelstraClear thing".

Seems that opendns is being directed to the main google infrastructure for streaming.
They where sending requests to a google cache in the cogent network.

I have updated my own config to use iinet's dns servers in OZ for google traffic using the dnsmasq config.
ns1.iinet.net.au = 203.14.168.3

before
> cache.googlevideo.com
Server: ns1.acld.clix.net.nz
Address: 203.97.78.43

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cache.l.google.com
Address: 74.125.103.28
Aliases: cache.googlevideo.com

after
> cache.googlevideo.com
Server: ns1.iinet.net.au
Address: 203.14.168.3

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cache.l.google.com
Address: 203.59.140.149
Aliases: cache.googlevideo.com

If you receive a answer for youtube traffic that points to 74.125.x.x then prepare for a slow youtube session!

Let me know where you get directed via nslookup/dig and if the speed improves!

I just tried those dnsmasq settings and it certainly did seem to result in less buffering during playback of a couple of clips. Hard to tell conclusively though as buffering did still occur.

So, to add the DNSs to the hostfile (on each computer), it'd be like this?

208.67.222.222 youtube.com
208.67.222.222 l.google.com
208.67.222.222 1e100.net
208.67.222.222 googlevideo.com

Those opendns ones are a waste of time - I noticed no difference.

I do believe there are performance gains from using the iinet ones.

Yip These seem to offer some gains. I did numerous tests and couldn't foind a single 360p or 480p video that encountered buffering.

Haven't posted for a while on this but have come back from holiday and found am now on 10mb speed up from 4...great!
Now it seems I can load up the front page of you tube quicker  to look at all the videos that still take ages to buffer..playback still  slooow...HD vids take an age to buffer  and even normal qaulity continue to stutter after about 20 secs of play.
My BF2 ping seems to have got a bit better tho :>)

No, that's not the same thing... 208.67.222.222 is one of OpenDNS's nameservers. If you did that, those domain names would resolve to 208.67.222.222 which is not a web host (ie you would get nothing). What freitasm was talking about is using 208.67.222.222 to look up the IPs of those particular domains and their subdomains, instead of using your usual DNS. You can't do that with your hosts file.

Success!

For those with DD-WRT or a linux gateway with dnsmasq can now "trick" google and surf youtube with a better experience.

Is anyone following this thread a linux guru who could configure a server with the dns resolver tweak above and publish it on the forum?

Heres hoping TelstraClear and the other affected ISP's can resolve the rate limiting imposed by google/youtube making the tweak redundant.
