Interesting just saw this, totally agree. Please keep the box operating as a basic linear tv unit! I dont need the cloud recording  or the app support or anything else. Though the 3 day rewind is handy.

...

Trying to figure out what's left if you remove the Apps, cloud recording and 3-day rewind. Isn't it just a TV at that point?

Sure, not as good as before, but at least it would not become a brick headed for landfill.  For those of us in marginal RF signal areas just being able to use it watch 'live' TV is reason enough to keep the box.

Cloud recording and 3 day rewind are part of their services supplied by Kaltura as are their streams, so will disappear either way.

The best option would be if they can reflash the box to Android and preload an iptv player running the "freeview" app. A nicer option would be if Vodafone made an agreement with Freeview to restream HD streams of the current linear freeview FTA channels in an open standard .m3u8 and mpd format without encryption. The current Freeview channel delivered over the Vodatv box are encrypted using playready

as for apps, without support sooner or later they will quit working.

here are some of the app urls i pulled out of the box a long while ago. They run in a browser as they are HTML5

I will munge them for the bots

For those interested in studying the Vodafone STB traffic,  you can use Kali Linux (I ran it in Virtual box) +ettercap +arp poisoning (two built in programs in Kali Linux). Will start you off in viewing the traffic from the STB

That would be the ultimate outcome.
I have a vtv running side by side with my Android TV on a TiVo 4k stream stick + a side loaded Freeview APK.

The difference in quality for the free channels between the vtv and the Freeview is day and night.
Vtv is just so much better.

First SkyTV

@sansom

"So that it doesn't confuse others, I should note that this thread relates to the VTV transfer to Sky and retirement, not T-box."

Thank you for the date 24 May. Was the year 2020 or 2021?

From the above photo one could assume that the intent on 24 May was "VTV transfer to Sky", Note that the first phone number is SkyTV not VFV!

The smartvu in NO way whatsoever compares to Vodafones TV unit

Can we have a a new thread here ? maybe title it Vodafone TV project.

For those exploring options of moving the box towards something community based?

What's the difference? How does it compare?

If I just want to view live TV channels once in awhile, would it be suffice?

We don't have a handy aerial output. Only broadband.

The Vodafone TV allows you to browse the EPG up to three days behind and watch many programs in "catch-up". Just click it and it will stream. No need to have a login to any streaming service.

It also allows you to record a program.

Those two functions don't exist on other streaming boxes.

These are the things that my wife likes about VTV. It will be a very unhappy household when VTV stops ( unless the new broadband Sky box has the same).

Anyone know if there has been analysis as to why VTV never reached market share to enable it to be profitable for Vodafone.?

Your mileage may vary but for me the the VTV was able to reliably show moving pictures with sounds where as the SmartVU made me wonder if the shape was designed to make it more aerodynamic for when you thew it across the room.

You can almost guarantee VF has done the analysis but it will be commercially sensitive and likely never public.
It's hard to imagine how it would be profitable when the only revenue (apart from any margin they had on the STB) being the few percent they would get from reselling Sky.

IMO VTV is a hangover from the failed Sky merger, It was destined to fail as soon as that was stopped. VF has never really cared about TV ever since it inherited the platform from TCL.

Given they are already in the business of moving packets how much overhead could it have for them?

Then weight that against their branding appearing to owners regularly.  For advert adverse people like me it is the only time I see their branding and the only thing that reminds me they still exist.

It would seem to me they have not looked at the big picture and are throwing away a marketing tool.  Worst they are now effectively telling people they are untrustworthy and could discontinue any service you buy from them so you probably look for a more reliable service provider.

They firmly cemented that reputation with me when they killed off the email hosting part of their ISP packages.

We would almost willing to pay a nominal fee for the freeview, 3-day rewind and record feature.
