Newtown:

I've been looking at https://wificonnect.co.nz/fibre/ and their 500/100 at $79 looks favourable and comes with a fixed IP. Anyone got any intel on WifiConnect and if they're any good?

There are scores of small ISPs in NZ with a user base no bigger than GZ so you're not likely to get any responses. Usually at a low price point they're Devoli or 2Degrees resellers. But in this case the uncharged static IP, no indigenous DNS server, fibre limitation to Chorus and simple billing setup are not suggestive of a typical reseller operation. They've been in business for over a decade and offering fibre for 7 years if that counts. If you give them a go I suggest you try quad9 instead of cloudflare for the DNS.

Oh, this is brilliant.

We wouldn't want to add in misleading information then such as GEEKZONE WILL GIVE NZHFC CUSTOMERS FREE FIBRE to our posts then.

What's that? Free fibre for a year? Wow. That sounds like something that would be good for people that have been affected by a closure of HFC from the cable network being closed. I can't wait to see that being offered. A fibre connection for free is a good incentive.

I called the number and found that:

  • HFC network shutdown by 8 Dec 2025
  • Discounted Fibre Everyday at $71 per month (500/100)
  • Discounted Fibre Max at $86 per month (900/500)

That's a 12 month contract. They'll also give credit to cover ~2 months, but I got a bit confused as they were going to bundle SuperWifi at $5, and I didn't get a definitive answer if I got to keep the credit if I used my own modem.

I asked about the overhead cables, and they suggested that the fibre installer would do that. I doubt that Chorus would touch those cables, last time it was Downer who maintained them.

Can anyone else share their interaction and confirm the amounts?

If the HFC network shutdown is supposed to happen by 8 Dec.  I'm surprised that one.nz isn't announcing it in a louder manner.   If even half the current users need to get fibre installed before then.   That would be a lot of new installs to try to get scheduled in before then...   (Edit:   mind you,  I guess it might be calculated to keep them from getting overwhelmed with migration requests at the start.   Possibly louder announcements are coming once the initial flurry of migrations dies down)

@Newtown

A friend on cable was told if switching to the everyday plan on fibre for  for 12 months ($72 per month for 12 months) a $200 credit and free modem rental for 12 months and no fee for sending out the modem.

And the amount of cable customers they will lose to competitors including me.

Perhaps they really did take up Chorus' $400 prezzy card offer so need to keep it quiet from the regulator $200 to the customer if they stay $200 pocketed for decommissioning works. 😛 All Chorus service provider pages now removed from public /conspiracy

I don't know how many customers they still have on cable but for those who currently do not have a fibre connection its pushing it to get them all installed by 8 December people do work during the day. I seriously think this has been badly handled by one.nz. I have three friends here in Stokes Valley that have never been advised of the 8 December cable shutdown that includes current cable customers in Upper Hutt.

They will want HFC customers to go Fixed Wireless, Its a much better margin product for OneNZ...

Having to Pay Chorus for wholesale UFB mean fibre plans are not as profitable...

But I've noticed that Chorus have recently upped  the Anti to compete with Wireless providers, with a "please stay off the internet between X and Y as I've got important things to do" campaign

Perhaps they are staggering the shutdown of the network and the 8th is just for ones where there was something they would have to do to keep it running so they want gone first?

Mind you it wouldn't surprise me if there are whole suburbs that wake up on the 9th to no internet and call one up to ask what's happening and get told they are not a customer and they deny that HFC was ever a thing.

Maybe the number of remaining connections is actually low enough that they think they can pull it off? Though obviously they don't have any public stats.

In my (anecdotal) experience all of the HFC connections I know of personally are long term users - everyone else is on fibre or fixed wireless.

I know that people that are savvy enough to do tech research were still signing up to HFC for the cost savings vs Fibre. But I feel though they haven't really pushed HFC since the last time it 'disappeared' and came back in ~2021...

Without Vodafone TV and Vodafone ISP email. One NZ has much less lock in than it used to.. This could well mean HFC numbers dropped steadily over time as people changed internet provider etc.

Obviously this is my purely anecdotal observation.
