One of the real issues is clearly the number of users. And while there are people saying "we want a FTA streaming box" the reality is most people don't need a a device as they have a UHF aerial or satellite dish.

While I don't know true numbers it's my understanding that Dish TV total SmartVu sales are only just into the 5 figures. If true that really shows how hard it is to sell something in a market our size.

I am sure that the Dish sales struggle are due to their products and reputation is terrible

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Probably off topic but wouldn't it be rather hard for a retailer to sell electronics with the consumer laws in NZ? (CGA).

You need to honour the reliability of the product for 3-4 years and say you get a 5% return rate, or failure rate. Wouldn't that really eat into your bottomline?

But likewise nobody is going to invest huge amounts of money into developing anything to compete with them when the market is so small.

Also, is unwilling to pay monthly subscription fees. A fta box where you get one-off review with nothing recurring is a dead-to-me proposition for any telco, OTT provider and so on.

The box was way over priced, and never should have been priced at over $99

It will be very interesting how much Sky charge to purchase their unit.

Weren't Chorus proposing to offer delivery of linear TV via fibre? Did that idea ever get off the ground?

It seemed like a good solution for people who don't want an aerial/dish on their roof but who aren't technical enough to connect a pseudo-computer to their TV.

I’ll be blunt; it was a very good little box and a great idea by voda nz. I feel for friends who put so much into it. For live tv or cable bundles especially, which some of us still enjoy and for which there is no alternative.

I won’t ever put a sky dish on my house. Freeview aerials are ugly and rough work to distribute around the house. This neat little box from sagem was pretty good, tiny with low power draw and not nasty on internet consumption.

without it, what is voda but just another mobile company with broadband? If the value is in the content…. Then it’s anyway but voda. Or spark. Or 2D.

Didn't it go up in price, think one of mine was nearly $170? I just wonder what the partial refunds are going to be and what the cut off date where you won't get any refund. I checked the date of purchase and it was in 2020, so last year. But by next year when it looks like they will announce the plan, it will be 2 years old.

Don't worry, we will be using the $179 RRP (incl. GST) as the price for calculating refunds.  (even if you received a discount from the retailer you purchased VTV from).

Chorus might have vocalised that idea, but clearly they had no knowledge of what's required commercially and legally. After saying this, they then would have spoken to TVNZ and other FTA providers to find out what is required to get approval to stream linear over broadband (i.e. not via the on demand apps with advert insertion). It didn't get off the ground.

We were discounting the cost of the box. Perhaps you're comparing the VTV box to something like the Xiomi Mi box or other device?  Generic Android TV devices are quite different as they don't have to provide a security testing certification that allows non-App premium Pay TV content delivery.

Therein lies the problem. If most people are only willing to pay such a tiny price, there’s no hope of us ever getting sustainable and good quality products and services.

I was one of its fiercest critics at the beginning, then things settled down and it became a great unit on the whole. I don’t believe it was overpriced at all, given what it provided. We will miss it when it’s gone.

We already have an excellent service available here and it is going to get better next year. Like it or not Sky provides a very good service and given the size of the market place here they do very well. I don't believe our market is big enough to allow another service and be profitable and pay the inflated fees the content providers demand.
