I read brentbarts comment to mean Telecom don't have any GSM handsets (other than the worldmode ones which are locked) to sell as unlocked, just like Vodafone don't have any CDMA ones to lock, so they can quite happily publicise that they won't be locking their CDMA handsets - as far as I can tell the comment was made to illustrate this point without considering the technical/practical details.

Perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick? I took it as meaning that Telecom’s CDMA handsets cannot be connected to a different operator’s network, which is not exactly true as we all know. Overseas operators (Telecom included) however will not allow you to connect a phone not approved to connect to their network on a local number. They will however allow roaming. This is the opposite of a SIM locking, where the loosing carrier bars that from the phone's end (unless you pay a fee).

Perhaps Brent could clear this up?

Don't worry brent, I got it straight away, so yes it was a good joke !!

On topic though: good on Vodafone for making the u-turn here. My guess is it was pretty much "global Vodafone" company hand-me-down policy to start with, but all good now :)

Let me say in support of Paul and Vodafone, that it is pretty hard sometimes there is a Company Policy and you support the Policy and at least Vodafone are willing to discuss the reasons why they made the decisions, obviously they have taken the feedback from here and othere sources and decided to change the policy, good on them and yes the consumers do have a voice Vodafone listened, so he now has to come on and now support the new company line which is a pretty hard thing to do but thats his job as it is mine we ourselves have done the some type of things, but comments like Hilarious aren't the greatest in building respect with a company, I would have thought the better lines would have been,

"Thanks Vodafone for listening to the suggestions and the feedback and it does appear your listening by you reversing the policy"

Just my 2 cents anyway and from own point of view I was pretty unhappy with the policy myself

I think it was more to do with the letter from the commerce commission, than listening to feedback from customers.

I note in the letter, they say they may lock their phones in the future, which somwhat contradicts their statement about 'listening to customer feedback' about locking phones.

Telecom had already announced they weren't going to lock their new phones when they release their new network later in the year, so it would also be a move to match telecom. I mean would you rather buy and unlocked iphone from telecom, or and locked phone from vf, if they are the same price. As we have only one GSM prover at the moment, NZ does have a very differnet market than the rest of the world, where they may or may not be able to justify locking.

We do have some of the highest mobile calling rates in the world ($1.39 per minute to a another cell network on a non contract phone) and extremely high data rates for non contract agreement, so NZ market does currently lack the competition required to bring prices down to affordable levels. This is why NZ has one of the highest rates of txting in the world, because it is a lot cheaper than phoning.

Well done to all those who did complain to the CC, as it can get results.
