Usually i ping trademe at 6ms but on DLM2 with 8ms delay i ping at 33ms

These traceroutes raise an interesting question. By the look of things, I assume that Vodafone is peered with NZIX (or at least WIX). However Telstra (cable at least) connections are still going out overseas and back to get to somewhere like ftp,citylink.co.nz.

Are there any plans to consolidate the traffic so that the TCL traffic can be shunted across like Vodafone traffic seems to be already?

ftp.citylink.co.nz is in two (three?) different places. If you're on the Telstra network you get it from the server that's physically in the US because they don't peer at WIX. Strictly it isn't local traffic going overseas and back, it's international traffic that could just as well be local.

It is very definitely in at least two locations. There's possibly one in Auckland too. You can easily verify it just by accessing it from multiple locations, or doing some calculations on the ping times.

This is from a server in Fremont, California:

So there must be a server over there. I think it's in Los Angeles, from memory.

That's in the US again. It's even slightly better than the ping to Fremont, so it's definitely not going across the Pacific and back twice. It makes sense for Citylink to double up that way since otherwise it'd be international for them too - it's the same thing TVNZ was/is doing for TVNZ On Demand, for example, and Citylink gets legitimately international traffic as well. Everyone just goes to the version of 202.7.6.9 that's network-closest to them, which is in Wellington if you peer at WIX or APE and in the US if you don't.

Folks, two pages discussing this, when the answer is above. TelstraClear did not peer with Citylink in WLG and all traffic ALWAYS had to go to the USA and back. Vodafone continues to operate separate networks: people on cable see things differently from what people on DSL see.

I suggest no need for tracert and other stuff, as this is known and won't be "fixed" soon.

Vodafone, THANKS AGAIN for finally implementing unlimited plans. A couple of techs were here to install the Internet, television, and phone services, and the difference is night and day. The speeds have improved over 1000% from the ADSL line!

The power levels blew my mind when I viewed them as well - all of the power levels were no more than ±1 dBmV away from 0!

I've put out the good word on Twitter and told some friends about these plans. I simply can't find anything else that competes, short of waiting a ridiculous amount of time for UFB. Even then, UFB still doesn't offer downstream speeds that are this fast, outside of the 200 Mbps trials in some select areas.

It's nice to see 8 downstream DOCSIS channels and four upstream channels too. For the longest time, my ISP in the United States only had 4/1 channel bonding for a 100/5 Mbps line, and then bumped that up to 8/1 after upgrading the nodes due to several complaints about congestion/oversubscribing.

This connection looks like it'll continue satisfying for a long time to come.
