This is a massive downgrade for staff. Both in terms of shifting from a premium location to a distinctly less attractive location and having an hour added to the daily commute for staff south of the harbour bridge.

How is changing locations an indication that business is bad for a company that doesn't rely on its location to sell its service?

Have you ever used the northern busway? Travel time is quite impressive (15 minutes vs 45 car trip time during peak) and with a good link up to the new trains at britomart this should be a no-brainer.

I use to work for TC and I found that building good.

North Shore is a great option, always said there was no need for big companies to all centre themselves in the CBD, technology allows companies to communicate with each other and their customers without meeting face-to-face, great to see Vodafone is eating their own lunch here. Companies such as Fonterra should not be plonked in the CBD, they should be in dairy country, close to the shareholders....Hamilton looks good

What about if someone currently commutes in from Papakura? Going all the way to the Shore isn't such an appealing option for someone in that situation, is it?

Not at all good, big risk moving such a large operation, has the potential to alienate 50% of your staff. Company would have to weigh up the potential saving on rent versus the potential cost associated with hiring a large number of people to cover those who decide not to move.

Absurdly good bus to the new offices. Probably the only place on the shore that actually gets enough being beside the "bus station" so the added journey from the old location will be minimal.

If you're coming from somewhere like Papakura that means you need to change buses, which is a hassle just to get to work - I know I wouldn't do it. And yes it's only 7kms - but in Auckland traffic that can mean the difference between being 10-30 minutes late.

Interesting comments, especially about how the news article seems to be fake. But really, how are you supposed to tell?

So this means vodafone are keeping their viaduct offices?

I used to work in the CBD and it was awesome having a park where you could leave your car overnight so you could go out after work and leave your car and catch a taxi home. Moving to takapuna would have been a drag.

Everyone has their own preferences I guess.

I live in East Auckland and work in West Auckland. 35km each way and through Spaghetti Junction. SH16 westbound in the morning and citybound in the afternoon is always free flowing. SH1 northbound in the morning and citybound in the afternoon will be the same.

I just looked it up on Google Maps, from "Papakura" to Vodafone HQ is currently a 33 minute, 34km drive. Papakura to Smales Farm is 36 minutes and 42km. If the Voda employees aren't willing to wake up 5 minutes earlier then moving is always an option..

The article wasn't fake, some of the facts may have been, in any case below is the copy from the NZHerald site before it was taken down, make your own judgement...for the record, the Vodafone PR person was very defensive...which is never a good look.

Vodafone New Zealand's national corporate headquarters is leaving Auckland's Viaduct Harbour area.
In one of the largest corporate relocations planned, the big business is moving out of its current headquarters.
Andrea Brady, Vodafone New Zealand's head of external communications, said the firm was yet to decide where to shift to.
"All options and alternatives are being investigated but no decision has been made," she said, objecting to details being published about the move, which she said was extremely disruptive to staff.
A move to Takapuna's Smales Farm was one option being considered, but there were others as well, Brady said.
"No contract has been entered into," Brady said.
NZX listed Goodman Property Trust announced the move, after a Herald story was published today.
"Goodman has advised that it has received notification from Vodafone that it will not be renewing its lease of the Vodafone Building when it expires in April 2017," the statement said.

Brady indicated unhappiness with Goodman's NZX notice, but was reluctant to discuss what the issue was.
John Dakin, Goodman chief executive, indicated there would be strong demand from a new tenant to the Viaduct Quarter.
"The 13,932sq m building is one of very few opportunities available for large corporate occupiers seeking prominent business premises in 2017. Opposite Victoria Park and neighbouring the attractions of the Viaduct and rapidly developing Wynyard Quarter, the location literally sells itself. Great transport links, and a planned refurbishment and upgrade means we expect this space to lease quickly," Dakin's statement to the NZX said.
Vodafone has signed the new lease to move hundreds of staff out of the building on the corner of Fanshawe St and Halsey St in the Viaduct area.
Staff were told last week, a source said. An independent contractor also said Vodafone would shift in 2017.
Vodafone New Zealand also leases offices at Smales Farm on the corner of Northcote Rd and Taharoto Rd.
The multi-million dollar corporate headquarters is 51 per cent owned by Goodman and 49 per cent owned a Singaporean government entity which last year bought into Air New Zealand House, the new Fonterra development now being built by Fletcher Construction and the Viaduct Corporate Centre, containing the Vodafone, KPMG and Microsoft/HP buildings.
The deal involved assets valued at $313 million and required Overseas Investment Office approval and certain approvals from the freehold land owner of the Air NZ and Fonterra buildings.

Why pay more than you need to for accommodation? VF are better off using the savings on revenue generating streams as opposed to filling the landlords coffers. The decision makes a lot of sense.

For some companies it would make way more sense to move away from Auckland completely to somewhere with lower rent/wage costs.
