Things must be getting bad at vodafone having to move from the desirable Viaduct location with great CBD parking,  to the North Shore.

This is a massive downgrade for staff. Both in terms of shifting from a premium location to a distinctly less attractive location and having an hour added to the daily commute for staff south of the harbour bridge.

I think this is indicative of the telco/ISP industry though, where the main product is now a commodity (bitstreams).  VAS revenue must be going down the tube.

Side offerings like TV are doomed to fail as US content providers will roll them over at some stage.

It is quite sad though, IT is changing really quickly and you can become obsolete overnight.

I thought they'd been on the North Shore for ages anyway - they've occupied most of the complex at Smale's Farm on the corner of Taharoto Rd and Northcote Rd for a long time, haven't they?

Things are bad because a company is relocating? I don't see how you got to that conclusion....

V.nue (Vodafones Viaduct office) is full. When I was there it was getting close to full before the Telstraclear merger, With the additional staff which moved in as part of the merger as well as the consolidation of their Great South Road call centre back to V.nue pushed the building close to its capacity.

IMO its a good move for them to move everything over to Smales Farm, for staff (who don't get free parking, which is most) there's a lot more of it than in the CBD.
Smales Farm also has a bus terminal right next to it which bus lanes on the motorway so public transport isn't really an issue.

From the companies prospective I'm sure the additional space, having staff all in the same building (excluding the people based at Manakau) and what I presume is a cheaper lease than the current Prime Waterfront location makes alot of sense as well.

TLDR: Companies grow & move offices from time to time. I wouldn't read into this as anything other than a new office.

I think the Corporate support etc (and ex TC?) staff are in Smales Farm already? I know the SELECT team is there.

VodafoneNZ has been in Smales Farm since the purchase of Telstraclear, Now read the updated Herald article

Looks like the article has since been pulled, so maybe the herald jumped the gun a bit.

They're moving out of the CBD, not in to it, so it's to a better location :P

What's the problem?

I worked at Smale's Farm for several years (not for VF), and walked to work from Takapuna.

A "desirable location" and a very pleasant life style.  smile

When I was there the other side of the building was taken up by EDS. That was a while ago now.
