A second person told me about this last night. And the Vodafone PR team failed to answer my requests for an explanation or confirmation...

With number portability, why would a prepay user stay with VFNZ? Telecom offer pretty much the same deal, and you can even get unlimited phone calls to a specified landline for $10.

They really are aiming for both feet aren't they?

This has been confirmed. Vodafone New Zealand is now notifying prepay customers of this new fee on using assisted help desk.

If it was $1 to get someone in NZ, immediatly, who can sort the problem out then and there, it would not be too bad.

But to charge $1 for a call to teh cairo mis-information center and call it customer service is false advertising IMO.

Hope the telecommunications complaint process has being nailed out already since I can see many people going straight there vs paying $1 for the runaround with a vodadrone.

As long as the $1 fee is only being charged for credit card topup's, Setting up Hotlink or checking account balance then I think it's a good idea....I mean if you follow the instructions on the website or the IVR or the automated text message, you will set it up fine but if you are going to be super lazy and not bother to do any efforts by setting up a credit card and rather have some guy in a call centre do it for you then too bad you deserve the $1 fee! As for the people having a whinge about the Egyptian call centre people the let me tell you that I have had more stupid results come out of our own NZ call centre people than overseas one's. They do something silly once we are right behind their stupidy and nonsense...If we do something stupid in our own call centre then we call it a uniformative mistake.....grow up and stop being racists!

Seriously, if CSRs aren't giving us great service, this is going to really become another form of cheap revenue.

Some of the reasons why people shouldn't get charged $1:

Re-call after being disconnected or being promised a call-back which never occurs
There is no resolution of problem (charging $1 for nothing...?!?!)
and so forth...

Manhinli hit the nail on the head. There are many many times where Vodafone makes the mistake. A customer is then charged to enquire about a resolution. 1) Easy revenue source. 2) Less money spent on CSR salaries.

It might be petty for it to be over $1, but this is the final straw for me and my extended family. I will be shifting everyone to Tcom with ported numbers when it is viable. Please Telecom be competitive.

My telecom coverage is about as bad as my GSM here, but I am going to make a serious cleanup to find my 2 unused sims with the intention of porting them to telecom. Somewhere under the bed I think.. or in the car...

Some crappy but portability capable phones can come my way if needed, but the nokia 1325 doesnt look too bad. I am sure there was another cheaper option available a few months back.

The lack of minimum topup will be good too, since I dont make calls on those numbers.

I wouldn't keep my hope up. After all, it is Telecom we are talking about here. Things are not going to change much until a 3rd Carrier enter NZ. It's easy to maintain a monopoly when you are the only one. It's still possible to keep a duopoly when there are two. But when a 3rd guy comes to the party, it will be very difficult to make sure no under cutting among the lot. :)
