bobco72: Have been considering T Box, so spent a while with one this morning, so a couple of issues to sort.

The T box output signal was being fed through owners HDD/DVD recorder so tried to record that.
Worked fine, BUT on switching channel the recording was blocked and in fact the recorder ceased to
record. To my mind what a subscriber does with a signal (that has been paid for) is entirely their
own business. Certainly very disturbing that Telstra Clear can manipulate the settings on a piece of equipment that does not belong to them. I found this unacceptable.

Secondly, it appears that if a program is running late or is extended for some reason, like a golf tournament going to a playoff situation, then one is likely to miss the action because the T box stops recording at the "official" program end time. Surely one should be able to instruct the recorder to record a certain channel for a specified period of time.
If the old analogue decoder could do that then why not this latest version?

Telstra are required to honour the legal rights the content owners have.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Re the recording thing: they were probably using the HDMI cable. HDCP copy protection is part one of the "features" of HDMI. If you use a different connection, such as the RCA one (red/white/yellow plugs), you may have more luck.

The overruns are not Telstra's fault. It's the channel's fault there. TVNZ is the worst in my experience. They seem to overrun on nearly every single program.

TCL can accept some blame, though, for the fairly useless padding facility on the T-Box :)

Thanks - will look at the connections. And you are right - TVNZ is pretty bad at going over time.

What right could TCL possibly have to prevent recording of that program?
And the original query remains.
Do they have the right to control a device that does not belong to them?
No way in my opinion!

No way in my opinion!

T-Box allows you to record for the only legal purpose for recording that is "time shifting". In other words record to watch later and not record to store permanently. By transferring to another device those rights can then be dishonoured. Use of HDMI vendors must comply with those regulations and restrictions on their products if they don't they breach the license to use HDMI.

Really, name one HDD/DVD recorder with an HDMI input. You may like to know that there are none.

I jinxed myself. We just got the dreaded black screen plus we have been having problems with not being able to change channels after exiting the planner or guide. Guess another call/e-mail is needed.

Can you record to your DVD/HDD via T-Box.? New T-Box owner and interested.

I am also having a bit of trouble. What do you mean by "tend to record the programme on afterwards". Perhaps that would solve my problem.

I just meant I record the next programme on straight afterwards the one I want to record. Not an ideal solution but it works.

As for recording programmes playing through the TV Box on my HDD recorder - have not had any success with that. I used to have no problems with the old Telstra box but now I get a copy protection message which annoys me as you can tape channel 2 via Freeview and it's the same channel so why the copy protection?

Glad i played with someone else's Tbox.
They had it for a week nearly, now got sky.
I'm smartening up the old aerial on roof, no Tbox for me.
Far as I'm concerned it does not work, live tennis coverage continued past advertised time for an hour or so once last week and those recording on Tbox miss end of action.
Not good.

This may be slightly off topic but with all the issues here concerning padding wouldn't it be easier if TelstraClear sent a signal to the T-box when a program begins and when it ends. The signal is digital so it can't be that hard to send that information to the T-box and it would remove any need for padding. The major issue would be getting Sky to pass on or embed that information but any costs could be mitigated by advertisers by making sure the T-box records one or two ads before the show - the same sort of thing you get when you watch tv shows online. Not only would it make the customers happy but its also a good selling point and customers are more likely to record shows and therefore watch ads which will make the accountants happy. Win - win - win.

You don't choose a book by its cover but it does determine which ones you read.

That would be nice, but it'll never happen. TCL don't have any control over what the channels do. They are just the transmission medium. There is no easy way to detect when programs start and stop from the signal alone. Getting a hundred plus channels to cooperate and provide that sort of information is just not going to happen.

The box just has to rely on the accuracy of the EPG. Missing the end of the tennis would have happened whatever you used to record it. Blame the channel for that, not the TBox or TCL.
