International is completely broken right now and it's like 10.20pm :(

http://www.xnet.co.nz/cgi-bin/status.cgi?id=370 - currently have issues with our Upstream provider, not related to International traffic concerns discussed here.

update appears to be resolved as of 10.20pm.

Funny how there have been peak traffic issues for months, yet there's nothing on the Xnet site admitting or explaining this? Perhaps they don't want to scare away prospective customers?

Sorry... Usually hate to state the obvious..

I'm still on XNET, and as my speeds posted in my last post tonight, I'm still beating you on speed to Los Angeles. Oh, and I have free data after midnight, hehe. :-)

I'm looking forward to all the things I can do with free data off peak, like streaming backups of my servers offsite.

I think everyones thinking about torrents, but what about the possibilities of megabit national traffic, and what you could do with that!

This is going to make so many more services cost effective now.

''Hope'' is good, I did had this ''hope'' 4 months ago when I join WXC, I'm not here to pull everyone to TCNZ but I used to be with TCNZ for the past 9 years going back to them. WXC turned out to be bad experience for me, lets move on...

Ragnor: In a change of pace from speedtest shots here's some gaming and mtr shots from 10.30pm tonight, trying to enjoy a bit of after work gaming on a wet friday night in Auckland. No dice.

5% packet loss at xnet's handover to us links

Ermm..most routers on the internet rate limit ICMP traffic so its normal to get 3-7% packet loss when using tools like the above at least thats what I understand!

When I look at the plan, I wonder, whats stopping people from having the free data and using a lot of data during 'peak times' to.... Because having free offpeak data would make it easier to justify downloading (as you are no longer paying for that data....)

I don't think thats correct, I would heavily doubt that midnight to 8am will have MORE network load than onpeak, and every mbit of traffic you move from onpeak times is a mbit of transit you now don't have to purchase. Most people will still browse during the evenings.

I think some people will, but thats why traffic usage is more expensive ($1.5/GB verses $1/GB) on these plans, the idea is not to stop people downloading at all during peak times, but simply shift enough of the usage off peak to balance it out.

Time will tell my friend. :-)

I am looking at comming over to xnet from xtra even though there are speed problems. Nothing can be worse than our go large speeds.

Is the internet browseable? I dont really watch youtube video's etc just looking at bebo and trademe really. Mostly have The Edge FM streaming as well...

Should I move or is there another ISP that offers the same type of plans at the same price?

Browsing is a bit slow, but manageable. The streaming on the other hand I think you may have a tough time with.

It still has some way to go, but I think it the worst has past. For example, YouTube would stream around the 200k mark (peak times), with constant re-buffers. It now streams around 300k. Still someway to go, but on the up. But as I said, NZ based websites & content is fine. Also, off peak is fine too.
