It brings tears to my eyes. That's what I should be getting from Vodafone -- an actual UFB service. I had one until late last year.

It's not related to UFB in anyway at all, UFB does not mean different traffic routing or faster international speed

xlinknz: welcome to the wonderful world off internet [bgp] routing where traffic can go in all sorts of directions deliberately, accidentally and maliciously

basically there are no guarantees your traffic will take the shortest or lowest latency path

and this means in some circumstances a satellite link [low orbit] can have less latency than a sea floor fibre link !

Which seafloor link?

No of course not. Ultra Fast Broadband could mean a club sandwich. The term doesn't imply anything at all.

What is the reason why Glassboy's tracert from wellington is far superior to mine in Christchurch?

When we were last issued a block of IP addresses for our network, it took a year for most of the geolocation services to recognise them as being in NZ.

We couldnt use them for a long time because google kept referring google.com to the Philippines version.
Youtube would never appear in english, and speedtest.net kept directing us to indonesian servers.

TV3 ondemand streams were unwatchable (outside NZ) - they and the ministry of education were the last to update their records. We decided we needed to start using the block and had to NAT tv3 / moe traffic from an already working block for about 6 months.

Geolocation services are not always correct.

Telstra Global's head offices are in Hong Kong. Thats where the IP addresses are registered too.

It doesn't actually mean that the IP's are used on Hong Kong devices. Based on the latency and cable paths it looks like its hitting East coast USA, which is where JustinTV and Twitch are hosted and peer.

Vodafone are not giving you a stunted service, you are receiving the service as designed and what you are paying for, be it ADSL, Dialup, Cable or Fibre no Service Provider has control over what happens and the service levels you recieve once your transaction leaves their servers.
