Dude, you're getting direct help for unsupported hardware here, how about being a bit grateful rather than comments like that.

If you look at the post a couple above yours, I begin with "Thanks, ".  So I am grateful for the time from helpful people on this forum.  I was merely expressing my (justifiable?) frustration with the difficulty contacting first line support.  Thanks for the advice though.

Any ISP support person Tier1 will hear ' The modem ABC carrier supplied works fine ' and basically say so what's the issue?

I can see where you are coming from let me do some digging tomorrow and I will see if any changes have been done to the Red Network hardware

Earbanean: I'm pretty sure the "PPPoE" in the log file is just a typo in the log output and it is trying to connect through PPPoA as it should.
Could be... but afaik PADI, PADO etc.. are part of the PPPoE protocol and are not relevant to PPPoA at least not between CPE and DSLAM.

That'd be great thanks.  To narrow it down a bit, this issue began on 1 July (give or take a day), so it'd make sense to look for any changes that were made around that time.

Hmmm, that is strange.  But I can't understand how it could have been connecting successfully for 3 years prior to 1 July, in that case then.

Having just had some pppoe fun with a draytek as recent as last night,
Factory reset modem,
Correctly config,
Try to establish a pppoe connection direct from you pc to the modem,
Google relevent guide relating to your O.S
Basicly you pc will handshake the connection with your login:pass.

Just in case the router is misbehaving,

Cheers

The guy is paying for the service, after all. It is not like VF is doing him a favour by allowing him to give them money. Whatever happened to 'the customer is king'? Oh, right. This is New Zealand.

Wow thats so far out of context.

We say have a call center of 10 people. They each average 10 minute calls. There are 60 calls a hour. Thats each person and maximum capacity.
Bob rings up with a 15 minute query, Jim calls up with a 25m long unsupported query.

See where im going now...

If its not supported why should they be under obligation help. There are private consulting companies that you pay to do that.
Vodafone would be up there with Snap for supporting user issues further than they need to.

VodafoneDylan: I'm looking into this with the team now, just waiting for results from a fault ticket. Please confirm you've set the modem to pppoa, vcmux, vpi/vci 0/100 like described here http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/5239/

Just me being curious, does the Red network support PPPoE, Bridged 0/110 vlan 10 like Chorus wholesale EUBA / VDSL connections do?

over chorus gear, Vodafone allow PPPoE and DHCP over vlan 10 0/110 for adsl and the normal PPPoA 0/100.

In my personal experience, both PPPoA and DHCP gets sessions closed on vodafones end under heavy load over long periods of time.

Assuming the draytek does vlan tagging, or bridging does passthrough the tagging, you could play around and see if you cant get a connection up over PPPoE instead.

Red Network, like other unbundled networks in NZ, might support PPPoE over 0/110, untagged.

VPI/VCI 0/110 (rather than 0/100)
PPPoE (rather than PPPoA)
LLC (rather than VC-Mux)

Obviously, this is an unsupported configuration.

Also I assume the OP is confident their broadband connection is on the unbundled Red Network.

Yeah, i just haven't played with a red network connection with my test setup to know if it is possible, and stable.

its certainly worth a play around, see how it goes.

Look, I don't want this thread to morph into a debate about what should or shouldn't be supported.  I'm frustrated with the support, but I'm not trying to force Vodafone into support they are unwilling to deliver.  If Vodafone state that my gear is not going to be supported, then I'm fine with that, as there are other ISPs where the Drayteks will work.  I'll move on.  But I wanted to at least try to work with Vodafone first, to solve the problem so that I don't have to cancel.  I believe Vodafone don't want me to cancel as well.

And also, if nothing else, this is a really perplexing technical problem.  I'd really love to solve the mystery and I'm sure a lot of the other people who have puzzled over it, would like to see it solved as well.  That's kind of the idea behind Geekzone, right?

I probably wouldn't be able to play around with this sort of thing till the weekend, but will try to give it a try then - at least out of interest's sake.

Earbanean:
But Vodafone are using simple logic that says if their supplied modem works, then the problem is with mine.  End of story.  They were quite rude and condescending about this and refused to think 'outside the box'.  Clearly there is a more complex issue here, where something on the Vodafone Red Network side affects some modems and not others.  But they will not investigate that properly.

Yeah it's rather irritating here, I guess they never heard of the saying "boer maak 'n plan" comes down to the fact that they want you to use their crappy locked down modem to the one you want to use.

Earbanean:
The symptoms: I get ADSL sync no problem ("Showtime"), but PPP won't authenticate.

If anyone here can help, or can point me to real support withing Vodafone, I would appreciate it greatly.  Failing that I will have to go through the hassle of moving ISPs.

Special authentication that they use? I know that modems have different types of authentication maybe they are now using an obscure one?

Have you tried putting your modem into bridged mode and dialing in with the PC?

If they can't/won't help you then I would just rather pay someone else for service luckily there isn't much of a market here so you matter a little more than if you were else where in the world.

Vodafone have been making some changes. They now do port based authentication. I was able to plug in my old ex Orcon, Dynalink RTA1320 to a Vodafone ADSL line. With the intention of just seeing if the modem can still get DSL sync. But it established a PPP session and I was able to goto speedtest.net And Also tried a Vodafone station router that had never been used on that line before. Which also worked.

I told the flatmate (who has that line) and he said that Vodafone do Port auth now. He works for Vodafone and gets that line for free. (which is why my house has both ADSL and fibre connections) Although it comes from a Chorus cabinet instead of the red network though.

So suspect something to do with the change to port based auth caused the drayteks to fail.

Well, yes and no. You could be right about the DSL connection, but afaik we do port based auth for UFB - ADSL and DSL connections still go through our BRAS. John, can you confirm?

Did you by any chance choose the same username and password as you had with Orcon when you signed up with us?
