quickymart: What about if someone currently commutes in from Papakura? Going all the way to the Shore isn't such an appealing option for someone in that situation, is it?

Once they get past the Auckland CBD (where they would be travelling to now if they're at the Viaduct) they'll be going against the bulk of the traffic on the bridge, so it won't add that much to the trip.

bmt SH1 northbound in the morning and citybound in the afternoon will be the same.

Seriously. I believe you haven't travelled to city in the morning from south then which makes you say that.

In fairness, while i travel on the bus from Albany to the CBD every day, I wouldn't be that happy if I lived in Sth Auckland and this was happening to me.

In saying that, companies move and you either move with them or go elsewhere...pretty simple.

I had a move to Penrose foisted on me a few years ago and there were no public transport options that worked for me...I lived with it for a year or two and then moved on...no big deal.

I commute to the shore every morning. It is another extra 15-20 minutes after CBD.

The speed limit and big trucks on the bridge drag the whole traffic.

As someone that often travels against the "bulk" of the traffic, no.

I actually would like them to re-do the stats on that movable meadian barrier because often its choked up in the 3 lane direction while the 5 lane direction is running fine.

The bridge is a strange one.
I commute from CBD to North Shore every day, so go against the flow (in 3 lanes going to and from work).

I notice that the uphill of the bridge going to work (northbound) is the slowest in the morning, and once you crest the bridge, it is fine all the way to work (I get off at Tristram).
On the way home, there is generally congestion from Northcote or Esmonde to Onewa, then a bit slow going up the bridge and fine from the crest all the way home (I get off at Fanshawe). It can be worse if something else has gone wrong on the network, and spaghetti junction is crammed casuing a tailback to the bridge, but generally the outside lanes (clip-ons) are OK.

I think the uphill bit of the bridge is what causes the most congestion - either trucks slowing down, or car drivers inadvertently slowing down.

As for Voda moving to Smales Farm, there are pretty good public transport options (NEX) from there to CBD, and onto trains if necessary. It may add 15 -20 minutes for those commuting from south/east/west, but those travelling in cars may get cheaper/easier parking.

I've only been to viaduct once but that was because of the telstra and vodafone merged and I was to help out the staff there to teach them about the tcl system

I didn't really like it down at the viaduct as people looked very tired. They never said hi or even a smile.

Departments don't talk to each other. It was very quiet very dull.

I was told to go there but nobody knew who I was when I told them why I was actually there.

The two team leaders there knew who I was there though and they did made me feel welcome.

Parking isn't free and you have to book in advance. Normal staff don't get free parking in viaduct. Some may have to choose parking at the tournament parking around the corner.

I never went back to viaduct and I decide it was time to resign.

I don't hate the company but I wont support it. I enjoyed my role but small things like discounts only available if you are at the viaduct leaving out other regional offices was a bit upsetting.

It would make sense for them to move to north shore since you are paying utility bills on both sides. But the north shore smales farm is rented I'm sure there's room to accommodate them all. Only the left side of the building at the time I was there was used by tcl. Not sure if they are renting the whole building now.

Amazing how a badly researched article can cause so much grumbling and speculation about a companies wellbeing!

I'm betting even Goodmans are going to get negative fallout from it as well ... would you want to deal with Goodmans after reading about how they discuss their customers with the press ?

In Goodmans defence, as a listed company they have to inform the NZX of any potential revenue loss, ie, tenant vacating building...so no issues with them. No idea what Vodafone is up to...but staying in the Viaduct is clearly not an option anymore, only real option is...well...Smales Farm, welcome to the North Shore. Can't believe the Herald printed an apology!

You're assuming everyone drives to work. I don't - I catch the bus (my wife needs the car) and I don't need to worry about parking either. If you don't drive and have to change buses, it's a major pain, and it would add a LOT more time to the trip to have to change and catch a connecting bus, don't you think?
