ajw: I disagree, if people choose to live in a rural location why should the taxpayer have to contribute by paying millions of $$$ in subsidies to supply modern telecommunications infrastructure. People are not forced to live in rural locations.

That is a specious argument. Many people have little choice where they live. Many also spend their lives working hard to keep the economy afloat with farm and forestry exports, tourism, mining, etc. etc. I suppose you want to cram everyone in the country into Auckland high rises at $10 million for one bedroom. People who 'choose' to live in the country contribute every bit as much as you do, and have every bit as much right to community resources.

I cannot get fibre in my street until at least 2019 but you don't see me going crying to the government because I don't have a fibre connection. I say again if there was a return on investment the telecoes would have wired up rural areas years ago.

do you generate the majority of our GDP and exports? do you create tens of thousand of jobs? are you one on the primary generators of our standard of living?

RBI is not to provide links to play WOW but to run efficient business that need to be internationally competitive.

Well if they are so flush with money let them pay for their own infrastructure.

This is true - unless you happen to be a single person with no children and no mortgage, and can just pick up and move your whole life to wherever (I know I couldn't), it's not easy.

One of the things government does is provide services that commercial entities cannot. You may not be crying about lack of fibre, but you sure are crying about contributing to the greater good through your taxes. Farms and small rural businesses help create prosperity for everyone. Adequate communications infrastructure is essential for that in the modern world. Rural communities need good communications just as much as everyone else.

Where I live I cannot get a 3G or 4G connection with spark, vfone, or 2 degrees but that doesn't mean I go crying to the government just because I cannot get cellphone coverage. In the real world I know that is not economically viable for a cellsite to be erected in my neighbourhood so I can get coverage.

So in this case you have the option of Sure Signal (If you have fixed line VF broadband)

I don't follow the point you're trying to make. What did Federated Farmers have to do with that crash near Arthur's Pass?

Then we better accelerate our rural infrastructure development so we can strengthen our competitive position.

Seems to me that there is a lot less demand in the marketplace at the moment.

There has been a huge downturn in the dairy industry for quite a while, why bother when you are getting less  on the global market.
