ajw:Rikkitic:ajw: I disagree, if people choose to live in a rural location why should the taxpayer have to contribute by paying millions of $$$ in subsidies to supply modern telecommunications infrastructure. People are not forced to live in rural locations.
That is a specious argument. Many people have little choice where they live. Many also spend their lives working hard to keep the economy afloat with farm and forestry exports, tourism, mining, etc. etc. I suppose you want to cram everyone in the country into Auckland high rises at $10 million for one bedroom. People who 'choose' to live in the country contribute every bit as much as you do, and have every bit as much right to community resources.
I cannot get fibre in my street until at least 2019 but you don't see me going crying to the government because I don't have a fibre connection. I say again if there was a return on investment the telecoes would have wired up rural areas years ago.
do you generate the majority of our GDP and exports? do you create tens of thousand of jobs? are you one on the primary generators of our standard of living?
RBI is not to provide links to play WOW but to run efficient business that need to be internationally competitive.
