Don't get me wrong, I'm keen to get some extra bandwidth to download the back catalogue of Revision3 etc, but where is the rest of this 120Gb going....you can be fairly sure wherever it goes the majority of it will be bittorrent. So, are you turning a blind-eye TelstraClear?

Certainly looks like they're implying it, unless they expect everyone to sit down infront of the Apple Quicktime Trailers page to view everything several times a week.

Crowbar: There are many free music bit torrent trackers (ones that don't allow you to download copy protected stuff).

Same with TV Episode sites, they cost, but they are there, some are as low as $1/ep. TVNZ on demand is pretty good too, there is alot of free stuff on there.

Indeed there are tv episode sites, but even though you pay for them they're still not legal in NZ. Unless we're talking about public domain content then I just don't see how we can get legitimate international TV content in NZ yet - and by TV I mean TV, not online shows (such as I mentioned with Rev3 et al).

gehenna: I find this interesting....is TelstraClear endorsing the downloading television shows from channel bittorrent? Or is there some other source in NZ besides TVNZ on Demand that I'm missing out on??

Joost, Livestation and a few other legal peer-to-peer on-line TV content distribution that are accessible from New Zealand come to mind.

Of course the quality of content available to New Zealanders doesn't come into discussion.

TV NZ On Demand is the only good content really...

No actually TCL especially are not interested in Peering to reduce the international traffic, as Paradise previously did prior to being absorbed into Telstra. I think it should be a legal requriement for ISP's to support peering if they have a presense in that city. The fact that to hit Trademe (New Zealands most hit web site) for example goes via the West Coast in the US when I live in Wellington is just criminal. Our international links would be far lest congested if TCL/Telecom decided to peer with the WIX/APE et al... however that would raise issues about how TCL/Telecom charge customers the same flat rate for data no matter where it comes from. Hence why Paradise de-peered from WIX, that way they could charge the same flat rate no matter where you go. Strangely enough, other companies who re-sell TCL Cable in Wgtn/Chch do peer with the local exchanges... As it makes sense and customers demand it.

Paradise used to be 10% on National Traffic before they changed to the "new billing system". Ie you have a 1 GB plan, and could download either 1GB Intl, or 10GB National or a mixture of the two. It was a huge same when they dropped that, it was one of the things that kept me on TCL, now it's just my wifes e-mail she has had for many many years. Other ISPs offer free national traffic and then charge you for intl traffic. I think the 10% was fair, however "gotta get paid somehow!"

I remember when those plans were around, I suppose from a (non-geek) customer point of view it's easier to not have to grapple with the idea of national traffic and the extra modem rental that was around then.

$230? And still 2Mb/s up? What a joke. Apt that it's being released on April 1st.

I was hoping that it would be a free upgrade, with 5Mb/s up and 100GB cap (2.5 times everything). Well at LEAST a free speed upgrade. So much for that. From the 10Mb/s 40GB plan to this is $130 more just for 25Mb/s and 80GB more cap... No thanks. $100 is expensive enough as it is.

And I thought the reason for this "upgrade" was to compete with ADSL2+. I guess not, which is stupid, given many people are already getting ~15Mb/s on ADSL. GG TelstraClear raising everyone's hopes for a year, then crushing them so badly, and telling them that competitors are "left in the dust" with a straight face. What competitors? You don't seem to be competing with anyone, given ADSL2+ is only 1Mbit slower than this, and for a fraction of the price - not to mention VDSL2, which a few ISPs are talking about. Oh and uninterleaved ADSL getting better pings than cable. And then of course theres the horrible peering situation and related national caps.

Bring on DOCSIS 3.0 and then we'll talk.

I find it difficult to believe they're gonna be able to sustain 25Megabit speeds when I can only get 10% of there advertised 10 on there Lightspeed 20G plan (...and that's on a good day at offpeak times - sure I'm going through a wireless router from the Motorola modem but who doesn't have wireless these days!)

Anyway, I'll start to perk up when the price has halved for 25mbps...

I cant see the point of supplying a 25mbps conection when our international speeds are so bad. I cant even stream a video off youtube without having to buffer it every 20secs.
