Dunno about other TCL cable users, but I get great speeds across the Tasman to Sydney on my 10Mbps connection:

I've also noticed a huge improvement over the past few months in international speeds.

I agree that some international links are pretty slow, but I wouldn't blame that specifically on TCL.

OurFord - do you really get only 1Mbps on your 10Mbps connection?  Maybe you should get your connection checked.

Hey JonC

Yep, my speeds are apallingly slow tho I don't think TCL will be able to help me that much.. If I connect straight into the Motorola modem via ethernet I get between 5-8 megabit speeds (that's usually at 7am-ish or 11:45pm at night - between the hours of 6-11 i get about 2 megabit down max) Haven't got through to TCL's phone support yet but when I do I'm sure they're gonna say "If it works correctly when connected directly to the modem then that's where our support ends" i.e. care-factor zero <shrug>

Problem being that over my wireless setup (Belkin router which was fine when used with my previous Xtra ADSL setup) I get 300 kbps down, 2 megabit up during peak hours and 800-1000kbps down and 2 megabit up during off-peak hours.

YES, i've changed my internal wireless IP range to something obscure and I've read pretty much every other post on this forum for other suggestions - tried everything and nothings worked. Consensus seems to be, buy a new Linksys router WRT54GL with DD-WRT but I don't partuclarly want to do this... I mean is this just a congestion issue, a DOCSIS issue or what? (i'm in The Terrace/Te Aro Valley Wellington area - don't know what node). Have emailed TCL support about a different administrative issue 2 days ago but have yet to receive a reply

Anyway, sorry to drag things off topic - In an ideal world I'd love to average 5 megabit down on my current plan and salivate over the 25 'cos I cant afford that just yet Smile

Ouch - I can see why the 25Mbps is of no use to you.  I notice over wireless that my speed drops from 10Mbps to about 6-7Mbps -  nothing as bad as what yours is doing.

I think that wireless 802.11b/g allow collisions in the radio channels.  Since there are collisions, you max out about 2/3rds of the rated channel speed.

If Telstra had released that press-release a day later, I'd swear it was an April Fools joke - even now, I'm not convinced it's for real. As others have mentioned, $229 is far too much for the service, I think most of us were thinking that Telstra would just bring in the 25mbps plans to replace the 10mbps plans.

I received an email this morning from Telstra warning users of disrutptions to service as they implement some changes - I was hoping this was linked to the speed increases.

Hello

As part of our current network upgrade programme we would like to make you aware of some small outages affecting Cable Broadband and/or Digital Television services you have with TelstraClear.

We will be completing a substantial amount of work over the months of April and May and this will result in a number of small outages in isolated areas over this period.

Most of the work is carried out very early in the morning to cause the least possible disruption and it is likely that you will not notice anything.

The first group of outages will be on the 7th of April - for 20 minutes each - between 00:01 and 06:00 - affecting a small number of customers in Wellington.  There will be subsequent, similar outages affecting small groups of Christchurch and Wellington customers over the coming weeks.

We apologise for any disruption caused over the next couple of months and look forward to bringing you the improved service this work will deliver.

If you are still experiencing issues with your cable service after the outage and after restarting your cable modem, please contact us on 0508 888 800 and ask for faults (7.30am to 11pm, every day).

Regards

The Team at TelstraClear

Hi amanzi,

Yeah Telstra posted a similiar message on their Network Status alerts page - saw it yesterday but didn't make the link to their 25mbps plan

EDIT: just re-read..so they're improving there service only (whatever that means!) - If my wireless setup sustains faster download rates and I average around 5mbps I'll not mind the odd outage - tho it sounds like people are already experiencing this - see Random Disconnections thread.

I've been suffering from random disconnections for a long time, and was only putting up with it because I knew that it was a known error (and the $20 per month credit helped too.) But I complained about it last week again and they sent out a tech who swapped my cable modem for "one that performs better with a router" That's how he described it to me - it looks the same but has a different interface. Since then I haven't noticed any disconnections.

I have an Airport Extreme - it's OK, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

It's the SB5100i according to the label on the modem.

I was getting random and frequent disconnects so I also complained and got a new modem. Same model as before SB5100 but the disconnects have stopped. Occasionally it takes a while for a page to load from a site but it loads in the end. Before I would get page not found errors etc.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
