Huh? I don't understand that comment. does that not mean that would give a relatively accurate test of the download speed being provided by the ISP.

International tests are dependent on international bandwidth and other variables.

it gives you an idea of how well they connect to NZ content, not international. but even if you start having issues to local stuff when where does the buck stop?

these people are having congestion issues to local and internation sites and speedtests, yes they can max out there line to a dedicated vodafone speed test mirror but thats because it doesnt leave vodafones network. it shows there is/are issues in vodafones links to the rest of NZ and international.

If I test to ACS data and/or two degrees Christchurch (I'm in Wellington) then I still get good results. The latency to Chch is higher as expected.

just because you get good results doesnt mean there isnt an issue with vodafones network, i would have they have multiple core networks in wellington and you just happen to be on one that doesnt have any issues. count yourself lucky at this stage.

That's a bold claim, do you have any evidence of ISPs prioritising speedtest traffic? Certainly it is NOT the case for Vodafone. And getting faster speeds to an Ookla speedtest server on the ISP network than to say a Steam server outside the network isn't evidence of prioritisation - that could be due to a restriction at the Steam end, a routing issue in between the two parties (either could be responsible), or a number of other things.

but if 2 people on the same connection type (cable 200 for instance) in different parts of the same town test to the same speed test server or same download source at the same time and get completely different results then thats eliminated a lot of the variables.

Speedtests are - at least in part - a sales tool. Users are urged to use their ISP's own local speed test server, so as to get a "good" result.

Most ISPs - including VF - give priority to speed test traffic. Normal "real world" traffic does not get priority, and is therefore significantly slower.

Well, I can tell you there is no priority given to speedtest traffic on Spark's fixed network at least (That's the network I know about), so there's nearly half of NZ fixed BB connections that don't have any speedtest priority right there. I suspect most ISPs are the same.

Users are urged to test using speedtest servers on the local network as that's the limit of the network and investment that the ISP directly controls. How sensible do you think it would be to blame Spark (for example) for bad performance to a speedtest server in Lithuania? OK, what about London? What about Perth? What about Sydney? What about in Vodafone's network? The point is that it's the same argument/logic for all of them, just a difference in magnitude.

If you're going to make comments like "Most ISPs - including VF - give priority to speed test traffic" you should bring some proof, or at least be right :-)

I won't claim to represent Vodafone, but I do work in their network team. I'm familiar enough with both our network design and our ASA/FTA obligations to know we don't prioritise speedtest traffic. In fact I can't see why anybody would, it'd make troubleshooting that much harder.

As far as investigating the issues in this thread, more info would be really helpful. I'm not aware of any congested cable nodes, and the impacts described in this thread are YouTube (8k, I didn't know it was a thing) and Steam. Could be one cause, could be many. Logging a ticket always helps as the team can check there aren't any physical issues with the connection (holds true for xDSL, cable and fibre).

I am a "gigabit" plan, when I first transferred to this I would get close to the theoretical maximum of 900+mbps down and 100mbps up. Lately I would thankful to get close to 50% the theoretical maximum and on many days my upload exceeds my download performance.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

We've seen some people with a similar experience and on investigation found a physical fault (such as the connectors in the home or street). The obvious faults of that nature should be pretty clear to our frontline teams, so worth calling through.

Speeds are to the Wellington Vodafone address. When I notice slow downs I test to the same vest server, I am noticing speed reductions over various times of the day. I have done the usual, rebooted the ONT and Router, disconnected all devices and test from one device only over wired Ethernet which is gigabit Ethernet.

Well my issue is resolved. Thought it was congestion but after a lot of disconnects my speed is good again after a week or so. They may have been doing work in my area.

Pretty annoying as I contacted their service desk with the response "try plugging into your router with Ethernet cable rather than wireless" Would've been nice to not get a copy paste response but oh well.

Have you logged a ticket Mike as I would be very interested to see VF official response to this. Here we have a staff member saying there are no currently congested nodes that they are aware of. Btw I appreciate the staff member coming forward and offing the information that they have.

I will be ringing VF this morning. My current Download is 27.41mbps and upload 0.92, yep 0.92. I have rebooted and disconnected all other devices.
