I can see one reason why they would do this, ie, saving money in royalties to Vodafone to use the name, but I hope now they pour some of that extra money into their appalling customer service (as evidenced by the shambles in this thread) and bring all the call centres back to NZ, not just "some" or "most" of them - for one thing, at least.

Will the My Vodafone app become My...One app?

I do wonder if they did think of using NZ or A. OA or ONEA .

Rikkitic:

mattwnz: Also using One and NZ together is very generic and does sound like a political party.

Or a TV channel!

Edited to add: After saying that, I Googled it just to see what would come up. The first two hits were both TV1 News.

They used to use One, but now use the number 1. The channel did used to be called just One .

It always cracked me up that the Spark logo looks like crossed wires. (I assume it's meant to be a wild card character).

A new logo didn't improve service levels for spark.

The best explanation I ever heard of the Spark logo was that it was cribbed from Matthew Ridges signature.

@pristle @zigg And that affects the services you receive how? Or is this just an attempt at some veiled racism?

No racism implied. Merely an observation.

We don't need these kind of "observations" here.

I suspect that love or hate Vodafone it was an International brand that had a certain cachet anywhere in the world.  Most people would not have looked under the hood and seen that it wasn't actually still part of the Vodafone world but would have felt comfortable with it as a brand. In becoming One NZ some of that gloss disappears and they become another 2 Degrees or My Republic, just A.N.Other cell company.

Inertia keeps people with a provider, and deals move them around. There are a few other vectors (employment contracts, family deals etc) but no one normal (i.e. who doesn't flounce off at the slightest change) will ever swap because they dislike the branding. There are a few folk out there who are remarkably good at taking offence where there is none - just don't give them any air time.

Edit: to clarify, this was in response to the reported comment that someone was going to leave as they didn't like the rebranding.

My takeaways:
- I fully appreciate the commercial reasoning behind migrating away from the Vodafone brand.
- “One plan” links just go to $80 endless mobile. Not too sure if this is intentional. Doesn’t really impact me as I’m on business plans.
- Changing the name doesn’t really factor in my decision making - I look at pricing and quality of service.
- My concern is potentially with long term relationships with Voda - eg. Daily roaming. I notice that a number of other telcos have quite a few limitations on their daily roaming packs (eg. Limited data or speed).
- It’s a small thing but I wish there was a way to opt out of the flavour of the day/week/month network name changes. I know it doesn’t change the way my phone works but is disconcerting… particularly the recent games.

I remember when Telecom XT launched, someone here on GZ asked why the phone still said "Telecom NZ" instead of "XT" and someone from Telecom said something like "we're required to put Telecom NZ for international compliance reasons" (how do I remember this?!). I wonder what those reasons were if Vodafone/One were able to change the name every day.
