As a distance runner, I place a lot of value in the fall detection feature of the Apple Watch. Given that runners generally don't carry their phones with them, I'm keen for One to get wearables support on their eSIM offering.

The disadvantage of Apple's satellite service is that, even if they were to implement it in a future Apple Watch, it would require the user to correctly position the device relative to the satellite signal which is hardly practical if the user is unconscious in a ditch. It sounds like One's satellite service would be more usable in this type of scenario.

As an interesting note, receive a second press release today about this - and a map for mobile coverage, showing how much of New Zealand is missing on One NZ coverage. Think what 100% coverage will mean:

My phone is a parallel import, so I imagine it probably won't work with this setup then 😕

Another question, it's not clear if any service would work with your Apple Watch. I would expect that Apple are working on future versions of the watch that will work with their service in a way that responds to fall detection, look out for it in this year's new Watch models.

If you are running somewhere you know does not have mobile coverage in significant areas could you not also take your phone?

Not necessarily, indications from the One.nz announcement are that the phone just thinks it is talking to another cell site. If so then could work on PI phones for text and data, but VoLTE may not - depending on phone software - if that is the voice bearer for any voice service.

The FAQ's list for this service when it launches could be quite long 😂

Let the demand stimulation and upselling begin,

Elon ain't given away satellite time and One won't be giving it away either....  so it will be interesting to see pricing details

I suppose they had to announce something to go along with the rebrand.  Vaporware (currently) seems as good an announcement as anything if all you're trying to do is attract people.

They let the Vapour escape already??

I've found it along SH1 to be pretty good, no issues in the area you mention, either.

Trail and ultra runners often carry hydration packs which would probably be able to accommodate a phone. Personally I tend to stick within city limits so it's probably largely academic for me, but there are some coverage gaps around the south coast of Wellington (Houghton and Princess Bays) which OneNZ really needs to get filled in.

Aucklandjafa: I’d say Apple’s SOS service will essentially relegated to devices that don’t have access to such services as Voda’s deal with Space X. Since Voda will let any NZ mobile use it’s service for emergency calls, Apple’s service will be non-existent here.

Reminds me of Vodafone's (and other telco's) promise of implementing Visual Voicemail here- back in 2010/11/12/13/14.

Haha, i saw that moment, in addition to him holding his paper notes, and just thought it looked like the announcement & stage had been cobbled together in 5 mins, and they had gone for the budget option when choosing what level of 'wow' they wanted from the smoke machine setup.

This would be a logistical nightmare. I'd be virtually certain that this would not be avaialble at launch - if ever - even if One did have Apple Watch support by then. The reference to a "global PLMN" on the One page implies that the Starlink service will effectively be roaming (similar to when you're on a plane or ship that has onboard cellular). Apple Watch only just added support for international roaming which itself requires VoLTE support (Starlink won't have VoLTE on launch). Even fewer carriers support international roaming for Apple Watch.

We used Starlink for a fixed network and I'm very happy with it..  However, you can't use it for mobile, there are no suitable modems. YOuc na vehicle modems for use whyne the vehicle is stationary (e..g caravan while parked up).

Have you tried WiFi Calling over Starlink? Obviously it'll only give you coverage in areas where you have WiFi that links back to the Starlink.

No, but teams over a Wifi-Starlink connection works just fine with up to three users at the location supported by Starlink.

Edit: I say up to three users only because we haven't tried it with more.

Was hoping for mention of eSIM support.

There's a link to register interest in the new satellite access 'from late 2024', and they'll keep us updated.

Yeah, right. Did that with the eSIM page and got exactly zero updates in ..3 years?

Good morning, hello, and B•••ocks  Roger Mellie. (Yes, I'm a fan of Viz also).

I've had eSim on Vodafone, now One NZ for a few months now.

They released it in November but didn't bother contacting people who signed up for updates.

You need to be on monthly account, and bring it into their store so they can send you it by email and recycle the old sim once it is deactivated from your number.

It took me ten minutes to do that with a new trainee at Lambton Quay who I knew gave good service from his previous job.

Edit : apparently watches will be supported later this year, I guess before the WWDC announcements for WatchOS 10 ?
