s.joseph: vodafone cant stop you using a prepay sim if you get an iphone. There'll be some kind of global unlock right?

All Phones have an IMEI Number ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mobile_Equipment_Identity ) The first 8 Digits tell Vodafone it is a IPhone 3G.

All Sim cards have a sim card number, Vodafone know weather a simcard is Prepay or not.

How can you jailbreak a phone to spoof either of these?

So is vodafone going to outright block prepay sim cards!???
I Just wan't to buy an iphone at full price to use it on telecom in november on prepay.

Yes Vodafone are blocking prepay sim's outright.

If I were you I would wait until November, when you can get a Telecom GSM SIMcard and try it in an iPhone before you actually purchase one. That way you don't end up with a device you can't use. Of couse, this would require you to not "need" to be one of the first few in the world to purchase one...

Why don't you go live there then? I disagree with the buying power comment, it's all quite relative.. there are certain things we get cheap here in NZ eg. rent, food etc. so we have more disposable income to blow on silly gadgets :)

2008 buddy, you been to UK/Europe lately? Cost of living is extermly high compared to here, even with our latest increases in our cheese prices lol

Maybe the Govt over there subsidises these kind of gadgets to make an hour trip on the tube more bearable every morning so they can get people to go to work lol.

Question 2: Is that even possible?

Im in the same boat as you. I can have my iphone for as low as $40 a month with no data. (I'll just use wifi at home, as its not IMPORTANT to me)

Or $70 with 200mb data.

I mean, even thats still cheaper than the cheapest iphone plan, haha.

But If I do buy, im going to Tosh with my money. Vodafone can shove it.
As for iphone plans? No way. I will do it my way. Keep my existing one and pay up front. Save me money ranging from 1000-5000.

What's the point in shelling out for the iPhone 3G if you don't want data? Your original iPhone with version 2.0 software will do everything the iPhone 3G will do minus fast 3G data (irrelevant to you since you don't want data, only Wi-Fi) and built in GPS which in your case will be useless as you don't want mobile data. You can sit at home on your wi-fi connection and see where you are...but that's about it.

What exactly do you intend using your iPhone 3G for? Showing off to your mates? You'd be better off with an iPod Touch...who'd know the difference?

This link says that the iPhone 3G is not available on prepay.
Johnr: if they are not blocking Prepay sims, then how are they going to be doing it?

As for my second point, that is a suggestion, a suggestion that a Vodafone prepay sim may not work in a Telecom iPhone when they are released.

This tells me they will have a restriction on the iPhone IMEI numbers and Prepay Sim numbers working together
