Spyware:

Sky account number should have been left blank as you don't have one.

Well - I do have a Sky account; I used it before switching to VTV.

Clicking the "Buy Now" link from the email just takes me to my Sky account page with no option that I can see to buy a Sky Pod.

If I load the "Buy Now" link in a different browser then I get a page where I can buy Sky Starter and choose a Sky Pod as the box. And then enter new account details, it doesn't give the option to use existing account.

Oh well, I guess I will just do that and see if they notice the 2 accounts and say anything ...

Yet you said that you didn't know what to put for the Sky account number did you not and entered the VTV serial number instead.

Can anyone confirm how the billing switches over after your new Sky Box or Pod arrives?

I believe that the Vodafone TV is deactivated as soon you activate your new Sky device? Does the billing also switch over seamlessly, i.e. you're not double charged for a period of time for both services?

My Sky Pod hasn't arrived yet, but my next Sky monthly payment via Vodafone is due shortly, and I just want to make sure I can just leave it and will all sort itself out?

Vodafone NZ has confirmed Vodafone TV will officially switch off as of 31 March and remaining customers who use the service to access Sky channels need to urgently contact Sky to order a new Sky Box or Sky Pod, or transfer to an alternative solution for free-to-air, to continue receiving a TV service.

“Since announcing the closure of Vodafone TV back in December 2021, most customers have made the switch but there are still a minority who haven’t responded to Sky’s communications about changing over and risk their TV going dark after 31 March, “ says Vodafone NZ Experience and Commercial Director Joe Goddard.

Sky’s Chief Customer Officer, Daniel Kelly, said: “We encourage customers to check for emails from Sky with offers to switch or to call us on 0800 759 190 to avoid a surprise when the Vodafone TV service stops working on 31 March. We don't want people missing their favourite game or TV show that weekend because they haven't switched over.”

Vodafone NZ has begun calling customers who have yet to switch to encourage them to contact Sky TV to place an order for a Sky Box or Pod so that customers can get set up as soon as possible. Customers can read more about the new Sky Box and Sky Pod options and features here.

Most customers who have been using VodafoneTV to access free-to-air channels and apps have already made the shift to a new solution. Any remaining customers should talk to their local multi-retailer to discuss alternative solutions such as Chromecast, DishTV units, or a SmartTV’s.

“As we say goodbye to Vodafone TV, we encourage customers to recycle their old equipment by ordering a freepost collection bag through our website or dropping it off in store. We’ve partnered with non-profit Abilities Group who break down Vodafone TV components into reusable materials and are proud to support its work creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities,” says Goddard.

“While the date for cut off was extended to allow Sky to get their new Sky Box and Sky Pods in the hands of customers, 31 March is the final curtain for Vodafone TV, so act today if you want to watch the Chiefs take on the Blues in the rugby, Pulse verse the Magic in the netball, or the F1 in Australia that weekend.”

Update to my previous message ... the SkyPod I ordered on 15 March never arrived and the pending charge on my credit card reversed.. so after spending 43 minutes on hold to get through on phone (and half an hour before that on web chat queue just for them to tell me this issue could only be dealt with by phone) , the sales person has filled in a form to advise the team to actually process my order which is currently in a limbo state in their system. And promised it will arrive by 31 March so let's see.

She lamented that "everyone was calling this week" ... yeah , maybe you should have allowed this to be done online without errors and people wouldn't have had to resort to calling.  (The email links never worked, and I also registered interest online months ago and never heard back from that).

Still lots of people using the old box: https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/131611449/thousands-of-people-still-using-vodafonetv-ahead-of-friday-midnight-switchoff

I suspect there are many in the same position as me.

I've got an activated Sky Pod, but the Vodafone TV is still working and it's significantly better than the Pod, so I'll keep using it until the Vodafone service stops.

The Pod is being sent back and my Sky service is being cancelled - the Pod is just not ready.

Yes, that is because there is not a better alternative.  We will use it until it actually, truly, really stops, whenever that actually will be, then switch to something no as good.  In my case public streams via Kodi.

If anything the VTV showed that Freeview where not doing their job right by point to a device that could do what the VTV does.

What is a good alternative solution here to replace the Freeview on demand playback/recording capability?
My main use is to watch/record certain Freeview shows, specially on TV3.

Any recommendations on a good DVR solution with a nice UI perhaps?

Sorry, I have been following this 54 page thread since the beginning in the hopes someone had a good suggestion for an alternative.  I don't recall seeing one suggested.  Please correct me if I missed one in all the noise.  There are partial solutions but they come with compromises.

Yes, this is hard if you don't have antenna, but if you do, may be try these ones?

Well, it has been suggested that a modified Tivo will fit the bill nicely as a Freeview box, but as you'll  know, I'm heavily biased. It won't stream Netflix, or anything else, but it can record two channels at once, while watching something you've already recorded,  it does need a UHF/terrestrial aerial and an internet connection for the EPG, but there aren't any limitations on what you can record, and keep forever. The community supported EPG has been running since the official service closed down in 2017, and most Tivo owners love their machines. There is a problem currently with the Prime and te reo EPGs, since they changed channels, but hopefully, this will be resolved soon. Unmodified Tivos can be picked up very cheaply on Trademe, but be very careful of the flashing green LED of death on the front panel. These machines are not worth buying. I've modified over 450 machines so far, and will continue to do so while there's still a demand. Details below.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

Ah, the compromise, using the A word, aerial.  I brought the VTV because my rural location has fibre, but aerial needed here for terrestrial is not a trivial exercise.

I am still using VTV. I have a Skypod ( arrived three weeks ago) sitting in a drawer waiting until 31st March. I am enjoying the pleasure of VTV EPG (never thought I would ever type that) to the end. I will switch over on 31st.  The Skypod is needed for access to two Sky Channels (Starter and Entertainment). If I didn't need them I would be happy with the Mibox.
