What is a good alternative solution here to replace the Freeview on demand playback/recording capability?
My main use is to watch/record certain Freeview shows, specially on TV3.

Any recommendations on a good DVR solution with a nice UI perhaps?

Sorry, I have been following this 54 page thread since the beginning in the hopes someone had a good suggestion for an alternative.  I don't recall seeing one suggested.  Please correct me if I missed one in all the noise.  There are partial solutions but they come with compromises.

I wouldn't bother with the over-priced Freeview approved Panasonic DVR recorders.  There are far cheaper options available from the UK store "World of Satellites" whom I've bought from several times over the years - www.world-of-satellite.co.uk

I've had this model (still showing on their home page) for a couple of years and its works perfectly in NZ with full NZ EPG: "OCTAGON SF8008 4K UHD 2160p H.265 HEVC Linux Enigma 2 Dual Wifi Multi-Stream DVB-S2X & DVB-C/T2"   It only costs UK 88 pounds plus shipping (arrived in less than a week from UK).  Just plug-in whatever external USB drive you want for your recordings.  There are options to have either twin satellite tuners or twin terrestrial tuners, or one of each.  The OpenVix software has some great free plug-ins too, such as when in the NZ EPG click a button on the remote and it will retrieve all the IMDB info on that programme or movie.  Please note this a recorder only, it does not also offer the NZ On-Demand service, but you couldload the Kodi plug-in, so maybe On-Demand is available that way?

Fuurther to my post previous, after 2 x 2hr sessions on hold to talk to someone i finally got hold of somone today... To be told that the email i got and subsequently processed for my SkyPod back in Dec had suffered from a  "Glitch".
The woman dealing with it had obviously been dealing with these all day as she commented "oh not another one".

So she had to completely re-process my order and then could only advise its definitely been done now!

So i got an email saying my order has been processed and then i would get a further email to advise when it was on its way...

im not holding my breath.

Oh and the email with the "Make sure you setup your account before it arrives" leads me to a login and then blank pages...
If only it wasnt for my need of Sky Sport there is no way in hell id be spending $60 a month on this dismal service.

If you are just after the sports package, then just subscribe to SkySports Now. I have that and it works fine. Plus it’s much cheaper

I had thought about it but then arent i limited to casting feom another device?
Also the coverage is lower quality and slightly delayed?
Also as we have no Aerial or dish i do prefer the simplicity of a single device for watching tv… alrhough now ill have to use an app for tvnz and Tv3 anyway.

Watching tonight for the last time… while it lasts. Not keeping Sky after this. (Probably Google TV Chromecast)

Would be nice if they could play goodnight kiwi or something! I wonder if the box will completely die or apps like TVNZ and Netflix might still work for a while

Poor thing never got to become “One TV”

Just imagine the case from TVNZ if it did.

Got me a SmartVU sv11 4K only because of the live Freeview (indoor UHF antenna doesn't work very well and I can't afford an outdoor one).  I'll have to give up on any PVR, pause and rewind capability for now. I just hope scheduled/programmed television is not going to go away soon.  Too many options out there when it comes to streaming services.

@drseuss25

1) you can have it installed on all devices that support the SkyNow app. (Google TV does) and have it streaming only one device (no different to now)
2) yes there is a sight delay in the stream, however it’s less than 1 min from memory, also the quality would be the same or better than the SkyPod
3) Solves your problem with keeping no aerial. Plus it’s on your phone so you can watch sport if you are away. I would never look back at a sky box as the positives outweigh the negatives.

(The other great feature is the self service part, no more 2 hrs on the phone to sky)

Reluctant switcher here thought VF TV would be off this morning, but there it is. April Fools Day joke maybe?

Notice says
VF TV is in shutdown mode
Some apps, services and channels may be removed over next 2 weeks.
Remaining Sky Subscribers please urgently call Sky

See www.one.nz/tv for more info.

We have had Google TV for 2 months. Cant say we miss linear TV but could watch 1,2,bravo,3, Maori TV if wanted via their apps. Pity Sky go doesn’t have a compatible app for Prime but you can chromecast it via their phone app. We port to other tvs so the Google tv phone app with remote function means we can control functions in other rooms. We haven’t had any outages and updates are seemless. The remote is a bit dinky but the voice search has changed the way we watch - finding progs esp YouTube clips is super easy

VTV replacement question: is there much difference between the A7070 (box) and SV11 (dongle) versions of the DishTV SmartVu, other than that the A7070 can connect to aerial or satellite for Freeview? We've bought one A7070 so far to replace our two VTV boxes, and it's usable but definitely a step down from the VTV. Trying to decide whether to buy a second A7070, an SV11 dongle, or something else.

You can do a side-by-side comparison on the DishTV website by selecting the products and adding it to the product comparison. It looks like the satellite & terrestrial tuners, the ethernet connection and the remote are the main differences.

Like most appliances, the bigger the box the better the internals (gross generalisation I know).  I tried the simple dongle approach for my daughter's house first, but wifi was sporadic.  The A7070 has been rock solid after swapping them.

Yes, I did notice the simpler remote for the dongle-sized product which may be an advantage.

Thanks for the replies. I tend to trust the box to be more stable, saw some reports of the dongle overheating - but that was a while ago and perhaps a different model. The A7070 has been reliable for me, except needing an occasional restart to make the Neon app recover from extreme lag.

I have had them running next to each other and SSN is a few seconds ahead of VTV, so it would be an improvement in any case.
