OK, just want to clarify.

We do monitor the network consistently and there is NOT any congestion. If there are issues, it could be related to line, modem or network access points not network speeds and so please do let us/me know and then we can investigate those.

There were issues with regard to network software, which lead to dropouts and I've updated here about that previously. And unfortunately, we had a power outage that affected services earlier today that's been fixed.

Sorry to ask the obvious, but if you monitor the network constantly, and I'm not doubting you don't, then how come no one found and fixed the noise detected on the node that Mike is on prior to him requesting assistance? Did this simply fall through the cracks? Could this same issue be occurring elsewhere without VF's knowledge.

Could I ask what Vodafone's definition of "congestion" is? There does appear to be at least some form of congestion impacting Vodafone's network, as also indicated by the past two months' TrueNet reports.

https://truenet.nz/story/2017/04/march-2017-urban-broadband-report
https://truenet.nz/story/2017/05/april-2017-urban-broadband-report

Heck, the former TrueNet article's subtitle is even Vodafone's Homegrown Congestion. :P Take a look at the NZ page speed graph in that article in particular. Vodafone dips to ~2/3 of maximum performance at peak hour.

The congestion isn't anywhere remotely near as bad as it was last year, but both with that congestion and the improvement we saw after one of the shorter-term fixes, things looked good until they didn't. Each time, the congestion started out small; we'd see a few Mbps lower than usual here and there. But then the gap widened and the issues became more apparent through additional hours of the day. That's the exact behaviour that I'm seeing now, though this time around we're talking on a scale of hundreds of Mbps versus dozens. This means that while general use isn't impacted anywhere near as severely, peak hour does still result in diminished performance, especially for bandwidth-intensive applications such as downloading large titles from Steam.

I've been able to reproduce diminished performance at peak hour for a couple of months now. My recent numbers haven't been as bad as they were a couple of weeks ago, but they're still lower than they are through other periods throughout the day.

It feels like Vodafone is afraid to heavily overprovision their network. Capacity seems to get planned to be "just enough", until more and more people sign up and compete for their own share of that capacity.

I know that FibreX Max connections can reach some truly awesome theoretical maxes and I praised the network with much consistency when we first got gigabit. I was amazed to get such stellar performance at such a competitive price tag. I figured that Vodafone realised how important it was to compete with fibre if they wanted the DOCSIS cable network to survive and thrive. But it feels like - once again - the network is only being given bare minimum support until it's inevitably cannibalised by UFB.

The cable network does have a lot going for it: It's cheaper; it's painlessly quick and simple to get connected in comparison to fibre; and under the right conditions, it could and should be every bit as fast as fibre for most common use cases.

Vodafone could stand to make a lot of money here from people that cannot put up with the delays and headaches involved with waiting for Chorus to get fibre installed at the premise. I only wish that I saw the already massive investment going further. I want to sing praises about my FibreX Max line again, I really do. But it's not easy when I sometimes feel I would be better off on VDSL with another provider that's got more room to spare on their network.

@kharris With regard to that specific one, we were aware of it and working on it. I doubled checked as the advice to switch back to HG659 modem was unnecessary, it was a specific issue on that node.

I swapped at the routers and as expected it made no difference as the issue lays outside my network. I did this to eliminate any issues my side of the ONT which was only fair to do to assist Vodafone. I have swapped back to my R7000 again.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yeah, but the TrueNet reports are complaining about congestion in webpage download speeds. The main complaints in this thread are about speedtest speed drops. The April TrueNet report states that FibreX drops to 93% of max at peak time - which doesn't sound anything like the major drops that some of us are having. I'm starting to think that the issues are localised. Just because it LOOKS like congestion, it doesn't mean it IS congestion.

but if it appears at certain parts of the day, say 3pm to 10pm every day then....

ONT?

Optical Network Terminal. It's the point when the fibre terminates and the signal is converted to come into the house.

I think he is referring to the fact its cable so its a copper network interface not optical.

Would noise on the node be related to uncorrectable errors showing on the cable modem interface?

Not congestion, but the internet is dead here tonight, both for us and for the neighbours (who also have FibreX).

Yes, I was wondering why a cable connection would be somehow using an ONT :)
