I tried to watch a clip last night at prime time and it was very stop-start. There would have been a lot of people online then, so I tried it again this morning at 7am. It was just as bad. In fact it was worse.

Me too :-( Watching YouTube on TelstraClear is a very frustrating experience. While it appears that TLC are aware on the problem and seem to be some activity to resolve the issues, it is quite amazing that the problem remains and has done so for so long. It can't be that hard to solve, can it?

On the other hand...I just tried to look at the same clip on Vodafone DSL when I got to my office and it was no better. I'm the only person using the system here.

Yeah, YouTube performance has got bad again for me also. It recovered for 2-3 weeks, but for the past couple of days it's sucked.

I noticed that downloading video (eg. via pwnyoutube.com) worked okay. I was able to download all five parts of a video more quickly than I could stream the first part. I'm not sure what this indicates. Some issue with Flash/RTSP?

I've noticed this too.
New TelstraClear ADSL2+ customer here. I'll do some debugging with WireShark etc and see if I can figure out what's happening...

In 12 minutes i can:
Download a 1gb file
OR
Buffer a 6 minute youtube clip at normal quality.

Awesome.

Its actually faster to load youtube over a SSH tunnel to the USA than it is directly.

eXDee: Yea, I've noticed that an SSH tunnel works better. Past that, I can't figure it out. I'm guessing it's something to do with TCL's proxies.

I'm guessing that T/Clear are simply throttling data from youtube's servers, at least ones it knows about.

Occasionaly you'll get a video that plays allright, and I'm thinking it's just coming from one of the video servers that slipped through T/Clear's grasp.

I've been checking performance with a video I uploaded myself to YouTube last weekend. It's been hopelessly stop-start on TelstraClear cable - but, to be fair, just as bad on Vodafone DSL. But this morning it's performing faultlessly on both services.

There's something going on, but I'm not sure the problem is confined to TelstraClear cable.

If you are still experiencing YouTube problems on Telstraclear, could you please post a comment in my blog post?

Also, if you have a Twitter account, please send the link http://goo.gl/fb/SMEu to @telstraclearnz.

c71931f: change to slingshot.lol (no i don't work for them :P ).
Youtube videos last fast'ish :P
They never have stopped to buffer apart from when i've been on dialup like now..when i've used up my 25gb data :o

First I am happy with TelstraClear in general, except for this problem. It's a very good ISP in terms of speed. Second, I have a 80GB plan and every second month end up using 120GB. I fear thinking how much this would cost on some other ISPs. Third, I don't have copper here, only cable (there's copper somewhere, but can't be bothered finding it).

Last, if it is off topic as your suggestion is, then please don't post.

Mauricio

Is there any particular reason why you prefer comments on your blog rather than here? More than happy to do so, just curious.

Can you post if you've noticed an improvement? I'm looking at 0941 & it's streaming HQ fine.

Tried the first video on YouTube front page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjent8cOhyM&feature=popular (SD) and it paused about 15 time in the first two minutes.
