Have you tried another modem that is not a dv120? However unlikely but possibly both DV120 modems have a problem with them? And have you tried them in non bridge mode and bridge mode. You should be able to do a PPPoE from your router if you can get a DSL sync and bridge mode enabled.

Back on page 4-5 the OP also tried to connect with a D-Link DSL-502T (one of the most widely distributed ADSL modems in NZ so unlikely problems with standard PPPoA stack) without success.

ADSL is predominantly PPPoA in NZ and you can't bridge ATM to Ethernet protocols without some sort of PPPoE pass-through mode feature.
Some unbundled networks support PPPoE on 0/110 however it is unconfirmed whether the OP is actually connected off an unbundled Red Network port for broadband (Huawei SmartAX?DSLAM) sometimes it is just a billing thing.

OP has indicated in one of the first posts this is a Red network connection.

Can defiantly confirm, chorus EUBA support, atlest on Vodafones network (IIRC spark dont support this however?) for PPPoE Vlan10 110/0 And DHCP Vlan10 110/10

yitz: The part that has me stumped is how the Vodafone modem is connecting.

And it's even more perplexing than that, because the Draytek did also connect OK - for 3 years. So on 1 July something changed that stopped a modem that was connecting perfectly from connecting anymore. And on that day absolutely nothing was changed on the modem.

I'd logically think that on 1 July something changed on the cabinet/DSLAM/exchange or whatever, that stopped the Draytek - but no one I've talked to at Vodafone is aware of any changes.

Chorus supports it but the ISP has to have this loaded into their BGP as it comes in on a different VLAN than a regular connection.

BNG ?

BNG = Broadband Network Gateway, I.E. the router that an ISP lands customers on (authenticates the customers) and applies customer policies on.
BGP=Routing protocol that ISP's use to communicate internal and external routes

Just to put a postscript (but not solution) on this convoluted thread. We eventually moved to Slingshot and the Draytek Vigor 120 worked perfectly straight away, with exactly the same settings (excpet ID and PWD).

So on 1 July this year something changed on the Vodafone Red Network, or maybe just our cabinet, that meant that some (maybe all) perfectly good third party modems (tested Draytek and D-Link) could no longer authenticate PPP, but Vodafone supplied modem/routers could still do so.

This cost many hours of my time and the price of an (uneccessary) second Draytek modem (for sale if anyone wants one), but I'd love to know what caused this now mostly out of curiosity - but I probably never will. Thanks for all those that tried to help

Sure PPPoA, That's what is officially supported, however not the limits of what you can actually use.
