Having lots of issues with YouTube tonight. Same stuff that's been happening for months, but was otherwise fine the last few weeks...
Choosing Vodafone for an ISP is the most exhausting thing ever.
We're having issues with Wikipedia here as well. Thought it may just be the site, but it's working fine over 3G. :\
There's a chance that I may be getting to work from home a few weeks from now. I'll probably just have to flat-out switch ISPs or move to another flat that has fibre if Vodafone can't get things sorted out.
Or purchase a VPN product and bypass as much of the VF badness as possible.
Cheers - N
Please note all comments are from my own brain and don't necessarily represent the position or opinions of my employer, previous employers, colleagues, friends or pets.
It totally astounds me that here on Geekzone we seem to be providing network support and feedback for what appears to be a company run by monkeys.
This is not rocket science, but it seems that Vodafone dont have the ability or interest to make their HFC network work as it should.
Purhaps I am shooting crap comments into the either, but this seems to come up time and time again.
Is the Voda (ex TCL) HFC network all a load of bollocks or are there real people out back there confidently stabbing away at their CLI teminals with a real design plan from the Gods above, or is it just chimps.............................
my 2c, probably way off the mark but its very trying

Having some issues with YouTube again tonight.
The problems have gotten worse. Some videos are taking several minutes before they even start loading.

http://youtubeinmp4.com/ might be an option, way faster to just dump a video file then play it locally
And the issues continue, with nary a response from Vodafone...
It's 12:25 am and some YouTube issues are having difficulty loading. Took close to a minute for a 480p vid to finally start doing anything.
Hello Kodiack,
The CDN providers are really clever and direct clients based on the ISP DNS IP address, load and other variables.
Because hundreds/thousands of clients are all getting the same response via a ISP's DNS cache a few have gotten even smarter. Now Google provide unique server for each youtube video request avoiding thousands of clients at the same ISP all connecting to a server for the life of the generic www.youtube.com DNS entry.
I had a few issues so forced my gateway to query all of the Vodafone caching DNS appliances.
This provided me access to the CDN's located inside exTelstraClear and Vodafone.
If you have a gateway using dnsmasq and can telnet/ssh to it tyou could consider the possibility of changing the configuration.
all-servers command forces a request to each and every server listed. First one to reply is used for that request.
It does increase server/client load but does reduce the "slow" failover due to DNS timeouts.
/etc/dnsmasq.conf
all-servers
server=203.97.78.43
server=203.97.78.44
server=203.109.191.1
server=203.118.191.1
cache-size=2000
cheers,
Techie
We have a pfSense box, Techie. :) I did some initial research into a similar setup a few months back, but didn't implement anything. I was honestly hoping back then that it'd have been fixed up soon.
I'll definitely look into doing this once I'm home, especially if you have a success story from it! Cheers for the reply!!
Things randomly got really bad for a bit. YouTube videos took a long time to load, and it took a while for Geekzone to load for me to be able to complain about it. :P
What the @$#!, Vodafone. It's terrible tonight.
I have a friend streaming on YouTube, and it took over a minute to finally start playing. At 240p. With broken icons everywhere. Mind you, the icons are still broken even after numerous refreshes.
Meanwhile, other friends on (A/V)DSL were able to load things up nigh-instantaneously and had no issues whatsoever with the 1080p60 playback.
It tried connecting to at least two separate servers before the video even started to load.
Good grief.
Whelp, we still can't get to YouTube, GeekZone, et. al. even after rebooting all of the equipment. I'm tethering to my desktop from my phone's 3G connection now.
I'm done. Screw it. This trash has been happening for months now. I'm going to TDR.
EDIT
TDR submitted. The congestion is one thing, but having sites that are suddenly randomly inaccessible is another.
