I did that (essentially) after I started this thread more than three months ago. They told me it was my fault (and this was a tech, not customer service), replaced my modem, then promptly ignored me when the new modem didn't fix it (surprise surprise). Even the guy who replaced the modem agreed it's a problem with TelstraClear's network.

There's no doubt they know about the problem. The fix is obviously one that will cost m...mmm...m...MONEY D: We can't have that now, can we?

I might call CSR on Monday since it's painful calling in the weekends. Last night was an exercise in frustration for me. I don't usually do YT but was researching some stuff and tried to watch a bunch of videos. Apart from the occasional video (usually very LQ) all buffered, stuttered and were generally unwatchable. I had to press the pause button and wait until the video had loaded completely before watching. In one instance a SD video of about 9 minutes in length took 15 minutes to download completely before I could reasonably watch it.

But I wonder it it's just YT. Tried to watch a HD trailer from Yahoo of Iron Man 2 in QT and the 2 minute trailer took 15 minutes to download before I could watch it. I could not watch in in streaming mode since the video would stop every few seconds or so.

I doubt if you had forked out for the 25Mbs plan it would be any better - the problem seems to be further up in the network.

It is not just TCL. I have TCL cable plus DSL connections for Vodafone and Orcon. They are all bad. I wouldn't say TCL is any worse than the other two.

I believe New Zealand deserves better.

We keep hearing that southern cross is not fully utilised and that they have dropped their prices substantially over the last few years....yet all I have seen is TCL increase pricing and decrease international performance.

CSR who answered the phone couldn't find the details of my phone/cable connection given my account number nor my phone number.  Wound up asking for my IP address. Sigh.
First question I got was 'have you done a traceroute'?
Then I got put on hold whilst the guy consulted with upper tiers.

In the midst of this I had loaded the same youtube clip as you guys were using to test a couple of pages back, that was pausing on me and stuff as well, used a Netstat and a DNS lookup to work out which servers I was pulling from and went to do a traceroute.   Couldn't get out, at all.

CSR comes back to tell me hes reset my connection as my modem had a ~20 day uptime. (WITHOUT FRIGGIN ASKING ME. SIGH.)  For the record it still seems to be pausing and carry on post reboot...

I got transferred to a different part of the customer service side as the techy thought my account was provisioned wrong, turns out there was nothing wrong except that I don't have a clear.net.nz email address :o  However the CSR I got from then
on was very good. I steered him at this thread and some other online coverage of the Youtube issue he hadn't heard of.

He went away and talked to another techy who advised him its a 'known issue' and that the problem is with Youtube, not TCL.  When I asked how this could be true given that my T-Stick works better than my 10Mbit cable link, there was no answer to be had.

I asked that my comments be noted and that the CSR take a look at knowit.co.nz and geekzone discussions on the subject.  He said he'd do that.

Summary? First Tech I got was far from helpful and didn't seem to know what was going on. Second CSR was excellent.  However, Youtube issue may not be widely known about within the first-tier CSRs, and TCL appear to be pointing a finger directly at Youtube at this point.

Here's the traceroute.

Love how it's a known issue that possibly the most popular broadband necessary site on the net is pretty much unworkable, and T/Clear don't really seem to mind.

The core issue here is Google's business model. They expect ISP's to provide free fat pipes to their servers to distribute content.

Maybe we should all be pushing the NZ Government to declare Youtube a social service and and subsidise it by taking a big chunk of SCC capacity just so we can all watch YouTube!

Needless to say myself and antoniosk (a TCL person around here on Geekzone) almost fell out of our chairs during lunchtime one day when sbiddle came with this "idea".

Seriously though it seems TCL has a problem of not providing good connectivity to one of the most consumed services on the Internet, and while Google seems to want a lot of "goodwill" there too, it's still up to the provider to make it happen.

I think TCL is gearing up themselves to be the first in a "net neutrality" debate in New Zealand.

Really I have to laugh, It was TelstraClear which 'de-peered' from the internet in New Zealand, because the suits figured this was a great way to shaft content providers and make some cash.

Now, they are stuck routing video overseas instead of to the google/youtube cache in NZ @ Telecom.
