That was a fantastic post. I don't agree with quite a bit of it, and some was brilliant and made me think. Nice! ! ! :)

Screeb: Because they're run by their bean counters, not their visionaries.

This issue was one of the things that almost destroyed Apple isn't it, until the brought Steve back into the fray and turned the company around.

The ad about 1GB top-ups: InHome (cable) customers have had 1GB topups for some time. The advertising is about the fact that this method of top-up is now available to all customers. We feel this is a good deal in comparison to other providers who charge users a whole extra month size pack.
The pricing shown briefly on the screenshot of the email (a price was a requirement so that people don’t assume top-up packs are free) is the price that is relevant to most customers in most places in NZ. Cable pricing is not.

There are terms and conditions on the ad: “TelstraClear Residential and product specific terms and conditions apply”.

New plans for InHome (cable) customers: these have been approved and are in build now. We're hoping to have these ready in early December.

Good to see you finally have changed the stupid system where you'd use say 21GB and get charged for 30GB (3x 10GB) if you had chosen 10GB packs.

That was one of the reasons I moved off Telstraclear DSL a few years ago.

Also I'm sure it's just a funny coincidence that you have decided to made this change several months after Telecom started offering $2 per GB overage on their Total Home Broadband plans.

As someone on cable who only has 2GB topups, I've yet to see this. (Admittedly it's not the nuisance 10GB topups would be, but it's still incorrect - 1GB topups aren't available for the biggest plan tiers)

Roll on December, and hopefully not being charged 150% for additional data compared to adsl (my personal bugbear, probably even more than the more expensive you're-not-on-adsl plans).

Hi Gary,

I am sure it comes as no surprise that I do not agree with your point of view.

The ad does not make it clear that these fees are only for people using the Telecom Wholesale network.

The issue is that the ads are not only targeted at new potential users, but also existing users who are being given a perception that they pay less than they do.

I question that this is anti-competitive towards users in the cable areas as it suggests that they are getting a deal that they are not.

Hence, when comparing their service offering with Telecom Retail, their perception, with out detailed checking, is that we are paying the same as the value being offered by Telecom. When in fact, we are paying 50% higher prices.

This is a veiled attempt to keep customers from comparing the value of these current broadband plan with competitor as it presents that we are receiving a value we are not.

The Telstra Clear ad clearly shows $2 as a price on the screen and the audio at the time of the display says "Is that new? They write to everyone like that..."

The key issue is that the audio statement is very clear - TelstraClear 'write to EVERYONE' when in fact their web site makes it quite clear that this is not true. They only write to users who are being provided service over the Telecom Wholesale network.

Gary has publicly said that it will be December.

I've been hinted that news will come out on 28th. I've been told plans are in test now. I've been told we might get some pre-hints a bit closer to 28th but people won't say right now, it's clearly to far out still.

I hope so because I really don't want to move to get more data but I might have to. It's just that it's going to cause so much hassle if I move given I have no Telecom phone lines into the house at the moment. So the wiring costs are going to swamp any data savings for months.

We have changed our InHome broadband (cable) pricing. There is a thread here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=44&topicid=93582

In essence:

If you’re an InHome customer (ie, connected to TelstraClear by cable) you should get an email from us over the next day or two outlining pricing reductions to our plans.You’ll get more information later, but in general the changes are:

LightSpeed 40Gb plan was $69.95 now $65.95

LightSpeed 60Gb plan was $95.95 now $75.95

LightSpeed 90Gb plan was $139.95 now $95.95

LightSpeed 120Gb plan was $209.95 now $135.95

Bundles that include these broadband plans will have equivalent price reductions. The changes are effective from the date of your next billing period after 1 December.

There are no changes to lower LightSpeed plans (the 2G, 10G and 20G). Overage for all plans also remains unchanged.

This new pricing means you can stay on your current plan and save money, or move up to the next size data plan for the price you’re paying now. Remember that if you move to the 120G plan you’ll also have a 25Mb/s connection.

If you want to change your plan you can do it online after 1 December through ‘Customer Zone’ / ‘My Profile’ / ‘Order or Change Products’ (the orange button on the right after you’ve logged in).

This new pricing means you can stay on your current plan and save money, or move up to the next size data plan for the price you’re paying now. Remember that if you move to the 120G plan you’ll also have a 25Mb/s connection.

Ahhh, they do say "There are no changes to lower LightSpeed plans (the 2G, 10G and 20G)." which I think is pretty clear.

Ditto for everyone under 40Gb too like me - why didn't 20Gb get any discount? (Would have been so bad if at least the overage was reduced)
