Are these network locked at all? If I buy one outright on prepay can I use it on other networks be it local or offshore?

I bought one brand new from TradeMe and it works with a Skinny sim. So I don't think it is locked

I am not sure R201 supports 850MHz UMTS/3G, which Telecom and Skinny operate on.

On Vodafone's website, it did not say R205 supports UMTS 850 either.  However, if you go to a shop and look at its packaging, is said the Oceania versions supports UMTS/3G 850, 900 and 2100.

A bit more googling confirms the R205 is the better newer option, warehouse stationery have the 205 on special and jb hifi have the 201 on special. I intend on using 2D sim eventually but would be nice to have 850mhz 3G covered as a just in case

Many thanks for your help!

We used a R201 and R205.

The 205 was a far better unit, more compact and better battery life.

There is a newer pocket wifi with 3G DC which is $199 for my money I'd be going with that one, but then again I'd also be using it on Vodafone :)

Cheers for that, everything points toward the R205. Had seen the newer DC version but for its intended use normal 3G speeds will suffice. Both the wife and I are on telecom plans with our phones but tethering is a pita, nor can VF or TNZ get even close to the 2D's 12gb for $99 offering.

Picked one of these up from JB Hifi this morning, so far so good, setup is easy. At $94 Incl 2GB data with 60 day expiry, its pretty good value also, impressed to find it comes with a usb AC charger as well
