Anyone else having problems with Vodafone's mail servers?

I can't send any emails via smtp.vodafone.co.nz at present. I can't even telnet it on port 25.

I've tried from a few servers on various networks I have access to and can't get it from there either.

Ditto smtp.clear.net.nz too (Have they consolidated their mail servers yet? - Maybe they are trying today and thats whats wrong?)

I've been sitting on hold to support for 31 minutes now as their status message doesn't indicate anything.

Right - 4 minutes ago they FINALLY posted something on their Network status page indicating SOME of their customers MAY be experiencing problems access webmail and sending and receiving email.

This is nuts - I suspect its a lot more than some, like maybe ALL as I tried connecting to their smtp server from a clients Telecom ADSL connection in Nelson, another clients highspeed Fibre connection on Snap in Christchurch and my Vodafone ADSL connection and none will connect and I new 30 minutes ago!!!!!!!

30 minutes wasted on the phone because they didn't notice and didn't update the status.

Who are you with and where? Granted I've only tried in the south island so it could be a network issue but I can get everywhere else ok seemingly so far.

It SERIOUSLY pisses me off when the big ISP's are slow or never post issues on their status pages. I get a client ring me with a problem. I test what I can, check the status pages and when there is nothing there I spend 15 - 30 minutes or more on hold only to confirm what I already know. Telecom are particularly bad as if its not universal they don't seem to like to advertise they have an issue - You finally get through and they say "Oh yes, customers in Christchurch are experiencing problems".

This is the status message on vodafones page

Some of our Fixed Line and Broadband Customers are experiencing issues with logging into their webmail service or sending and receiving emails at the moment.

 This is currently under investigation.

Vodafone would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this issue may cause.

 Many thanks

I'm intrigued you get through ok - I tried a test from mxtoolbox.com email server test and got the error

SendSMTPCommand: Timeout waiting for response after 15 seconds.

What vodafone arn't telling you is that they do have a quite serious problem with their spam filter

It does do a great job with the spam, it captures almost all spam and quietly deletes it, but what they arn't telling you is it also quietly grabs a good portion of legimiate email and quietly deletes that as well.

That sounds like yahoos system, although you can usually find the legitimate email in the spam folder, rather than it getting deleted.

I've been having some severe problems with missing email since Jan, I got some logs of spam email from vodafone for may, 298 emails deleted by the filter, looking at the headers provided from the spam filter, nearly 150 of them were legimiate emails, this is about the time vodafone have now decided that I can no longer get the logs......wonder why???

I suggest anyone who suspects that vodafone's spam filter is deleting legitimate emails get in touch with them and ask for the spam filter logs

My es.co.nz email is down, too. That's an old ISP bought by iHUG and subsequently bought by vodafone.

I know the appliances which Vodafone use for filter out spam/viruses, and they do it based on several metrics. The biggest cause of emails being dropped is a poor sender reputation, meaning the mail server they are receiving emails from has recently been cited for sending large quantities of spam globally and therefore this adds to the 'score' which an email gets tagged with as it goes though the various checks. Once this 'score' reaches a configured value, say 3 the emails will be quarantined or dropped.

The appliances only hold logs for the last XX million emails so the volume of emails going through them will determine how far back their logs go. If they are piping their logs off to a syslog server then they could keep them for longer IF needed.

I obviously don't know how Vodafone have configured their ones, however what I do know is that they are crazy good at filtering spam compared to other solutions, typically only getting 1 false positive in around 1 million emails.
