Hi Everyone!

Firstly, I just want to say I will also send an email to Vodafone tomorrow but I figured that it won't hurt to ask here first seen as others may have been in similar situations and also for the fact there are Vodafone employees on GeekZone :).

So my situation is, I am an ADSL2+ customer of Vodafone and have been for 2 years now and I'm lucky enough to be on their "Red" network, which means I'm on their own "equipment" therefore a better quality service (theoretically).

When I first changed from my Telecom service to this "red" network I noticed very good results as far as speed tests are concerned. However it's been two years since and I am wondering if the "chorus" equipment has improved in my area. Therefore my question is, what is required to have my connection changed from the "red" network to the conventional equipment and vice versa? Is it a quick setting change from the office or would it be a complete rewiring at the exchange? I wouldn't mind switching for a week to run some tests.

I would just like to see if my lines stats are better on the other equipment, and if my line is possibly even "VDSL" compatible.

Any responses are appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Aidan

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hi Aidan

What do the modem line stats say and approx where are you located? (down to street)

If modem line stats are good and you have good house wiring setup then really nothing would need to be done

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply, I have PMed you my address.

Here are my current line stats on the red network.

Line Attenuation Up : 11.4
Line Attenuation Down : 19.4
Data Rate Up : 1139
Data Rate Down : 17141

I could probably get these a tad better with some improved wiring, though I already have a DIY master splitter installed.

Thanks,
Aidan.

I am sure you are quite close to the Glenfield exchange and would not have a cabinet between you and the exchange

So what does that mean? Would my connection be better off not on the red network? Would I be able to get VDSL?

Thanks,
Aidan

It means you don't have a wholesale cabinet between you and the exchange as up the road then round the corner and along a bit is the Glenfield is exchange, You are connected direct to the this hardware

Okay thank you for your replies. What does it mean to be in the "red" network then? As it definitely improved performance 2 years ago. Would it be simple to switch off the red network for a week?

Thanks,
Aidan

' Red network ' means the copper is connected direct to Vodafone hardware in the exchange as the exchange is unbundled and no you just can't turn off the Red network

Damn, I'm guessing that puts me out of reach for VDSL then.

Thanks for your replies!

EDIT: Line stats are "OK" for VDSL according to John in PM.

Does the Chorus coverage map show you in VDSL2 coverage?

I haven't been able to see the non-fibre only coverage map for several months now.

If you know where I could find it that would be appreciated.

However I was out of the coverage.

Thanks,
Aidan

That's the map I used to use but it doesn't show VDSL anymore.

Yes it does. It's the 20Mbps+ layer.

Ohhh, that makes sense! Thanks for that (also just a note there's a space at the end of your link that makes it 404, but I got the right page).

I'm about 2-3 houses out of the zone, though I think being in the red network (having better line stats) will help. I'll just need to wait and see what Vodafone release with their VDSL plans.

Thanks,
Aidan
