I've also had this problem over the last 6 months or so.

I've logged a support call with TCL but they're just pretending not to know anything about the issue and keep sending me messages like:

"Hello Sam, can you advise if http://www.php.net/docs.php appears as an attachment? If you have any further queries"

... without actually listening to me saying its the transparent proxy and that the error is at random.

It does happens sometime - it happened months ago with Twitter for example. Trying to open any page would just result in a Save dialog being shown. Their transparent proxies were messing with the MIME types.

I haven't seen this for a while, but it did happen very frequently before.

Yes it's very aggravating indeed.

I want to stay with Paradise due to the speed their cable network in Christchurch, but we just have so many problems with their network it's ridicules.

It's not like their customer support has any redeeming features either.

It's all too often pages time out or load to a blank page, leaves people on my network thinking the website's done - I'm guessing this is also a problem with their proxy?

I must say I don't experience such problem though. And I'm in CHC on TCL Cable (coming from Paradise customer)

The only times we had this problem with page loads IIRC were twice in the last four months when they had proxy problems. Other than that and the occasional "Save" dialog problem (which hasn't happened for me for a while), it's working fine.

These issues are random or intermittent, simply going to a few PHP enabled pages is not good enough to say there is no problem.

Are you able to provide give me contact details of an in-house technician I can speak to?

I've just had word from an associate working work a client using TCL Cable and he had this to say "I'm now having issues with international sites missing stylesheets and
images etc, Ross"

I can't really give you the URLS because it doesn't serve up the PHP as a URL it sends it as an attachment / downloadable file.
It can happy to almost _ANY_ PHP URL.
I've spoken with someone at TCL regarding this before in passing and apparently it's a known issue, probably with your transparent proxy.

This issue is common knowledge for example:

good example just happened to me just then when trying to upload a photo to facebook... I'm sure you've seen a save file dialog box before but you may as well see the attached image.

But you have my word; that at random it will sit there for about 30 seconds then try to save the file.

TCL's transparent proxy is causing issues with web pages pages
being delivered as attachments rather than inline, causing a download
window rather than a page being displayed.

It can happen to almost any PHP based site.

Telstra / Paradise is having issues with PHP pages again.
PHP pages often try to save a files instead of displaying in your browser.
It's not my computers / browsers nor is it a malformed PHP page being served up by the host.

I know this is one of Telstra's many 'known issues' but it really needs to be fixed ASAP along with the other 'known' youtube problems.

Hmm, I've never seen this behaviour outside of misconfigured web servers (me trying to get php setup/working).

The caching is setup such that the same site goes through the same cache for everyone. (well, to be precise it's per ip address so big sites can be split across a number of them). If you're seeing this issue and no one else see's it to the same site/url then it's either an extremely short lived event or there's something else going on.

What browser are you using? If it's firefox you could get one of those plugins (firebug and livehttpheaders are two I've used) that show you the HTTP headers. The header named "Via: <something>" is the cache that served that particular request, you could see if it's the same cache each time you have problems. You can also see the mime/content type it is being reported as.

Here's those two headers as I'm seeing them for http://www.php.net/docs.php

Content-Type: text/html;charset=utf-8
Via: 1.1 bc1

So this is being served by cache "bc1" (I think the 1.1 is the http version).

While we're talking headers, unless it has an Age: header and the value is greater than 0 then it's not a stored/cached copy, but a "live" one. If there's a via but no age header then the cache has decided it's not cachable. If there's an age header but it's 0 then it simply didn't have it stored (or it was stale and this is a fresh one).

Anyway, if you can capture that sort of info and submit it then it should help any diagnosis/troubleshooting.

Hmm, I've been having this problem for more than a week, but I haven't got round to determining if it's just my computer/router/modem. I haven't had the page saving issue though.

Switched to snap and got 250KB/s

Funny thing is however that a traceroute shows it going the exact same way
(it goes out to telstraclear from snap, and then is an identical route from
there)

So the route is the same, the only difference is the telstraclear
connection will be going through their transparent proxies whereas the snap
connection will not)

So I am concluding that it is highly likely telstraclear's transparent
proxy is currently causing speed problems on some international websites"

This just keeps getting worse.

I was unable to browse any PHP based sites for over half an hour last night, I've just had a friend email me saying one of his clients who uses TCL cable is having the same issues.

And what is TCL doing about.... Sweet bugger all!
In fact they've actually stopped replying to me all together.

I don't think the problem is specific to PHP pages, it's just a lot of
pages get their mime info screwed by the proxy and then trigger a download
action from your browser rather than displaying.

Intermittent problems are always a pain.

You could use a proxy application to capture the http headers and response content while you're having a problem with a specific site.

Eg:

Filddler
HttpFox Addon for Firefox
Wireshark
