Well I found the answer

"Yes. If your SIM card remains unused for 90 days, you will not be able to keep your existing mobile phone number, and your service will be deactivated. Once your mobile number is deactivated, Kogan Mobile is unable to retrieve it for you.

The SIM card itself also has an expiry date, which is printed on the Kogan Mobile SIM Pack."

So unlike normal NZ SIMs they don't last 12 months.

When I first glanced at the advert, I thought it was 18GB, for $13.40 per 30 days, as they are all the bolded numbers. But examining it more closely, it is only 1.5GB per 30 days on that plan, and the 18GB is for the entire year. You can get through 1.5 GB pretty quickly these days. But compared to mobile data prices of the past, this a step in the right direction.

Good hopefully this shakes up the market a bit, been a little stagnant of late.

They are just reselling vodafone, albeit on slimmer margins.

Really going to be hard for them to make money.

3puttssuck: Can’t see anywhere on their page that they do a Data only sim for iPad etc. Their chat page wont let me scroll down far enough to send my question. Keeps scrolling back up.

I was on my iPad when I tried this. Now on PC and was able to chat with them online. It appears their chat person had very poor English by they way they answered my questions. It was they way an Indian or Asian person would speak English. Any way, no data only plans.

Awesome will jump on the 30 day 32gb plan for $4.90 when my sim gets here. Then might think about taking a chance on the 32gb for 1-year at a 40% discount.

Bit that gets me though in the T&C's: Discount does not apply to subsequent renewals

Hopefully if enough people jump it will shake things up again :)

Great range of data packs to choose from once you find yourself caught out by the inflexibility of the 365 and 90 day plans.

$4.90/300MB $11.90/1.25GB $21.90/3GB 👎

Could well need to use on average monthly data cap less 40% for it to work out, or have data on a second SIM handy for when you run out.

I don't really expect to see much movement here. Kogan isn't offering rollover data, so it's probably of most interest to people who make lots of phone calls. Data pricing for both plans and add-ons is otherwise very similar to Skinny, albeit with a 30 day renewal instead of 28 days.

I'm looking at Kogan as a landline replacement due to the unlimited NZ/Aus calling.

True insofar as long as you're comparing the pay-monthly option; the discount offered for paying for longer in advance (especially the 12 month timeframe) is significant enough to make it substantially cheaper than Skinny. Time will tell if the need to pay a decent amount up-front to gain this discount and the loss of roll-over data are things that discourage people from making the move (which is surely what will drive the other telcos to improve their own offers - ie, they lose customers).

I have an uneasy feeling about these resellers moving into our small market, it could well end up being worse for the consumer as it may result in dilution of revenue and profit which will harm development and innovation.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The annual discount is only 10% for the lower plans. The higher plans have larger discounts, but people with those plans are more likely to either not use a large portion of their data allocation, or pay for extra data which isn't discounted. Pre-paying for 12 months of data and potentially being locked in to higher priced add-ons for a service with a downward trending cost isn't something I'd want to do.

Only the lowest plan ('small') has a 10% annual discount, so I concede that's not much of an incentive!

That said, the next one up ('medium') is a 25% discount, which is substantial enough for it to be only an extra $4 a month ($1 a week) to go from a $16 Skinny plan with 1.25GB (rollover) data per 28 days to one with 4GB (use or it lose it) data.

It's more than enough of a data increase to have me interested in making this exact move, given the high cost of extra data with Skinny (either as one-off purchases, or paying well over twice as much for the $36 plan with 4.5GB data).

But, yeah, I'd concede it'll be only a small minority who are willing to pre-pay for a whole year in advance.
