A new entrant to shake up the telco market launched today, with Kogan Mobile becoming New Zealand’s newest prepay provider, and the only challenger brand currently powered by Vodafone – one of New Zealand’s leading mobile networks.

Kogan Mobile delivers value and choice through an online only digital service, and is a new and highly competitive alternative for Kiwi consumers. The offering brings unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia as standard on all voice plans, generous data inclusions, and innovative annual prepay payment options, at some of the best prices Kiwis have ever seen.

With 30, 90 and 365 day prepay options, New Zealanders can choose a saving to suit their lifestyle and bring their own device and their own number. Easy setup, no hidden fees, no excess usage charges, tri-fit SIM card, and secure and reliable coverage make Kogan Mobile a great choice for smart consumers. Kogan Mobile also offers competitive rates on international calls to 44 destinations, and international roaming to 56 destinations, without any nasty bill surprises or excess usage charges.

As all prepay options include unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, customers need only to select their desired data inclusion, of 1.5GB, 4GB, 15GB or 32GB worth of data per 30 days.

Prepay plans start with Kogan Mobile’s Small plan offering unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, with 1.5GB of data for use within New Zealand per 30 days for the equivalent of $13.40^ per 30 days when you sign up for a full 365 days.

For those looking for more data, Kogan Mobile’s Extra Large plan offers unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, with 32GB of data for use within New Zealand for the equivalent of $34.90^ per 30 days when you sign up for a full 365 days.

Kogan.com CEO Ruslan Kogan, said Kogan Mobile sets a new benchmark for what a great value mobile deal looks like.

"The launch of Kogan Mobile will advance New Zealand’s telco market and set a new standard for what Kiwis demand from mobile prepay providers,” he said.

“Customers drive every decision we make and we work tirelessly to deliver better value. We know that Kiwis are looking for prepay mobile options with unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, and huge data inclusions, that don’t break the bank or cause bill shock – that’s why we’re launching Kogan Mobile in New Zealand.”

Online self-service to maintain low prices

Kogan Mobile is an online only service that is able to deliver great prices through digital efficiency. Customers can control their Kogan Mobile prepay online at accounts.koganmobile.co.nz, with access to additional add-on offerings including:

  • roaming to 56 destinations from $11.90 for 3 days (choice of 700MB roaming data, OR 500MB roaming data, 100 minutes of calls, and 100 texts),
  • 300 minutes of international calls to 44 destinations for $9.90 for 30 days, and
  • data add-on packs ranging from 300MB ($4.90 for 30 days) to 3GB ($21.90 for 30 days).

SIM cards can be purchased for $2 from Kogan.com, and are delivered in the post.

Credibility across the ditch
Kogan Mobile launched on the Vodafone network in Australia in 2015, and has since grown rapidly to hundreds of thousands of active users in under four years.

"We’re thrilled to be working with Vodafone in New Zealand to offer Kiwis a great prepay mobile service at incredibly low prices,” said Kogan.

Jason Paris, CEO of Vodafone New Zealand said the company was proud to join forces with an iconic Australian challenger brand to help deliver greater choice and value for mobile customers in New Zealand.

“We are proud to be Kogan Mobile’s choice of partner in New Zealand, and to underpin their digital-only offering with Vodafone’s excellent network connectivity both in New Zealand and while roaming internationally,” said Paris.

“Internationally, these sort of network partnerships are common and we’re pleased to help bring the best of the world to New Zealanders with a pure digital, radically simple offering.

“Kogan Mobile has built a great reputation by challenging the status quo and delivering fantastic value to consumers across the ditch, and I’m confident they will build a strong brand here,” Paris concluded.

Special launch offer

As a special launch offer, Kogan Mobile is offering up its highest inclusion plan for just $4.90# which provides 32GB of data, and unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, for 30 days until the end of September 2019.

All the Kogan Mobile prepay deals can be accessed from today at Koganmobile.co.nz and Kogan Mobile SIM cards can be purchased from Kogan.com for $2.

Wow that is some seriously good value for data on a great network to boot. Very impressive. We be tempted to buy a sim just to enjoy the launch offer for a month. I take it you can port your number to Kogan?

Edit: have purchased a Sim, took a few tries to get my address to verify, kept telling me to enter a valid suburb, ended up entering it manually. Expected to ship September 13th.

Hotspot/tethering is supported... I had to ask in their chat as it's not mentioned anywhere on their website and the site search is terrible.

Did you have an option to port your number? I'm on Skinny Direct and will happily switch if I can keep my number.

Can I transfer my existing number to Kogan Mobile?

Yes, you can! Simply select “Transfer (Port) Existing Number” during the activation process.

So the 'medium' plan works out at 70c a day if you go prepay for a full year; this compares to 57c a day for the $16 plan with Skinny.

For that extra 13c a day one would get nearly 3x the data (131.5MB vs 44.6MB).*

The comparison is not nearly as good if electing to go with either the 30-day or 90-day packages - $1.02 and $1.13 a day respectively for the same medium plan.

Given it's only more data I want/need, this is certainly an appealing proposition; I do wonder, though, whether it's worth waiting to see how the other telcos respond, as I'm otherwise happy with Skinny.

* I'm placing all increased value on the data allowance, given minutes on the $16 plan are already way more than I use.

Odd thing is the roaming destinations.

The Cook Islands is included in the 56 roaming destinations. For anyone who knows anything about mobile data over there it's very expensive. $50 for 3GB for a local sim and Spark/2Degrees don't offer data roaming whilst Vodafone offer 25MB for $100.

Seems odd that Kogan magically offer 700MB for $11 (~$17 per GB) which basically matches the local sim.

For those used to 'rollover' data with other providers like Skinny, there is one significant change: my reading of their T&Cs is that data is metered out on a 30 day timeframe, irrelevant as to whether one purchases a 30- 90- or 365-day plan. It's a matter of use it or lose it, so no data banking like one is able to do with rollover data (useful for the holidays, for example).

Do these SIMs last 12 months after activation or like normal Ozzy SIMs they expire after 1 to 12 months depending on the purchase value??
