heavenlywild: What speeds do you get from the same spot on Vodafone?
Was going to ask the same question
techocrazy:Just posting about my experience with Kogan Mobile so far.
- Set up was very easy, though it looks like you will get promotional emails from Kogan Mobile as well as Kogan (The online store), at least until you unsubscribe...
- By default your credit card is stored and your mobile plan will auto renew. (Same as Skinny Direct used to be).
- Take care with the APN settings, Kogan seems to have a slightly different config and my Vodafone S8 didn't fully connect to the network until I properly updated the APN.
- I can confirm the unlimited MMS works fine.
- I can also confirm that 4G speeds in my area are the same as on Vodafone (See obligatory speed test).
- Kogan Mobile numbers start with 028, if anyone was wondering :P
In short all seems well so far, lets hope this means better and more vibrant future for NZ mobile plans :)
jackyleunght2002:
Kogan mobile start with 028? Isn't that they are sharing Warehouse mobile too?
I was just reading off the Kogan account dashboard. It was given as 028 85XX XXXX.
So if it wasn't 028 it could be 028 85. Wikipedia says that 028 is CallPlus or Black + White with 028 85 being owned by Vodafone apparently.
But i'm no expert :P

Usually about 70 down 40 up when I last did it. Dont have data to burn on speedtests. That long pause on the upload is really messing with things, and it seems that is consistant with usage of it with it being quite laggy to get anything happening. It is using 4g on that sim, I have to physically swap them on this phone to get 4g back on vodafone and I need to make my data last so will not be doing any speedtests tonight on VF.
edit: toggled airplane mode and its come up to a lot better than before. Also things are not lagging like crazy.
lNomNoml:
Speedtest's are one thing but how is the real world performance, can't you notice it being slow while browsing?
It was terrible before. I scrolled things and there was delays in content appearing (damn lazy image loading) Now after swapping sims over and toggling airplane mode it seems to be behaving. Perhaps there was some overloaded part of their network before or something that I am now not on. Its fine now,
Just ordered a SIM. Can't seem to choose a mobile number so I am assuming what number you end up with is a lottery?
Having trouble porting number from Skinny, but their live chat support is fantastic. Also confirmed that you can buy the 365 day 32GB pack from the $4 pack, but it'll blat current allowances. If you want to keep it, they wanted to go via the support people. Quite happy so far, speeds are fine.
I'm still dithering over making the switch, so interested to hear from anyone if there's a particularly strong reason not to do so.
I kinda hoped that there'd be some sweetener from Skinny in response to Kogan launching as I'd like to stay with them; however, the <50 MB/day that the $16 plan provides is inadequate, and the cost of upgrading this is substantially more than the cost of Kogan's 365 day medium plan... So unless there's a good reason not to, I guess I need to go ahead and switch before my plan renews in two days!
