after being prompted on this thread I’ve finally got round to setting up GV.  Unfortunately when I choose a number, GV comes up with an error which says to try again later.  A quick google finds I am not alone, but I haven’t found a solution.  Any ideas?

Google Voice is not available in New Zealand. Are you using a New Zealand SIM and phone number to setup?

I had no issue setting it up. Are you using a US VPN?

You will also need an active US phone number to receive a call on in order to activate the service. Callcentric is what I used, but it can be a bit tricky to set up if you're not familiar with SIP.

I know that GV isn't available in NZ. I have sorted out the having a US phone number and can pick a US GV number. It just gets an error when it tries to associate it with my account.

I have used a US VPN but it doesn't work. Hotspot shield allows me to be in the US as far as google is concerned.

Hmm that is odd. Are you using a Gmail account? Google Apps? Or just a Google account linked to a non-Google email?

Hmm that is odd. Maybe try setting up a seperate gmail account and see if that solves it? I know it's not ideal, but it might be a work around.

If that works, you can fwd emails from the new gmail account to your normal one. Will mean however you wont get the GV calling integrated into your existing gmail.

I wondered about doing that but may just wait until I'm in the US and see if it works from there.

I'd also try another VPN service to make sure that the service isn't mangling the request in some way.

I can't remember what I used, but I found a free PPTP VPN service that worked fine.

I've now tried a few VPN's but no joy.  When I ask for a number, I get to pick one then I get the error.  It no longer asks for a number to call me on.  Do you know if it's possible to delete my forwarding number, and if so, how?  It doesn't appear in my GV settings.

I don't really want to set it up on a different account if I can avoid it.

Thanks

Andy

So I have finally got it working!

Deleted all my cookies and went to https://www.google.com/voice/?setup=2#setupvm/ where I could put my number to verify in again….finally it worked as planned.

Thanks for the pointers.

You can use Google voice (as in voice chat within gmail etc), but there are no numbers available.

GV works well in the US as there is no difference in costs for calling a mobile or a landlines, so Google can in effect do call forwarding to mobiles for free - which is a key part of the offering.

If they offered GV in NZ, someone would have to pay for the cost of forwarding incoming calls to your mobile number.
