How? Is there a diagnostics panel or similar?

It does feel warm to the touch when this happens.

gzt: First find out if it is actually cpu heat throttling or something else entirely.

Hi Mike,

There are third party utilities that will tell you how hot your CPU is running. I had this issue with a mini-pc and the best one I found was Core Temp. It tells you exactly what is happening with different processors and also gives you some additional diagnostic tools.

Well I've been using Windows 10 on two laptops, one an i7 and the other an i5, with 4Gb and 8GB ram respectively. Both have a standard 1TB HDD that comes with Acer laptops.

My experiences. In a word or two - disappointing / slow.

My i7 runs like a celeron, only slower. On startup disk usage hits 100% for the first 3-5 minutes after logging on (MsMPEng - AKA Windows Defender).

File copy times are in the 100Kbps range for disk access, not Mbps range.

I cant control when updates go in on a restart, leaving me twiddling my thumbs on a restart, normally during what is meant to be a productive work period.

The event log is crammed with Security processes starting and stopping, CAPI messages and other crud.

The list goes on but it is getting longer and mostly it is about a distinct lack of performance in what is meant to be a reasonable machine. You dont buy i7s with 2GB video only to have to watch grass grow while using it. Oh, and one other thing, if MS disables the ability of my network cards to get a DHCP lease or log onto a network owing to updates one more time I am likely to go postal and post very rude letters to them.

On the plus side, um .... nice pictures in the login screen - pity they are downloading and using my 3g data to do so. I honestly cant say there is anything that has tweaked my interest or feels better than Windows 7.

My newest peeves are:

1 - Having to scroll through long lists of crud, in the folder list, to find c drive or my PC, as they are now pushed down by auto populating crud.

2 - Unable to pin a portable program from my Y drive on the task bar, so have to close all windows, go to desktop and start it there.

Up until now i have resisted the temptation to tweak, deciding to give Windows 10 a reasonable run, as a bog standard user. Tweaking has now commenced. Disk access first priority.

Tweak 1 - Disable MSMPEng.dll by excluding c drive from scanning. File copies now in the 1-5Mbps range, 9 minute copies down to less than a minute. I can now use my pc on start up without waiting several minutes for the disk to get off the 100% mark

Tweak 2 - Turn off Super fetch. Better performance again.

Tweak 3 - looking for a replacement for MS Search / Indexer. While it fails to find items when types into the start menu (e.g. skype doesn't show by typing skyp) and other apps ditto, it still serves some functionality - but runs with higher disk reads and writes than the file copy process I have been doing. If anyone has a good replacement option please let me know.

There is an app here that disables windows defender (turning it off in the control panel only works for a while then it turns back on)

Mike if you want to ping me in that thread or start a new one and ping me and some others we can continue there. But very briefly, I would expect to see that throttling event reflected in the event log if windows knows about it.

Just wondering, have old pc motherboard LGA1156 gen, on their support download driver pages didn't have Windows 10, they only have until Windows 8.1.

Do you think it's good to upgrade to Windows 10? I still keep it as Windows 7 at the moment.

It may work, it may not. But it should work.

If you really want to know, do a "complete PC backup", upgrade, do lots of stuff for a few days and you will know, it should be fine.

i have a laptop which has a core2duo in it and has a socket BGA479 or PGA478 which is the predecessor to the LGA775, which makes it 2 series before the 1156 and its been fine

The "Get Windows 10" app allows you to run a compatibility check. You may have it already, it is that thing that tells you 10 is available.

Do you think it's good to upgrade to Windows 10? I still keep it as Windows 7 at the moment.

No need really for an old machine. W7 support continues until 2020. That is beyond the life of the machine.

In any case you have at least until August to accept the free upgrade offer.

Last night my desktop got automatically updated to 10586. It's not on any preview ring or anything like that. A couple of issues\annoyances now:

1) I had to wait 20 minutes before being able to use my computer this morning. First thing I was greeted with upon trying to log in was a pulsing blue screen saying "We have updated windows" followed by "Your files are exactly where you left them" - this of course sent a chill down my spine, it felt somewhat akin to a stranger walking up to me on the street and saying "your children are exactly where you left them" in an ominous voice, but it does at least appear to be true - then "We have exciting new features to show you" and finally "We'll be ready soon" - apparently soon means something different to Microsoft because when I want to use my computer I want to use it now, so when they initially said "soon" I was hoping it meant a couple of minutes not 20. And why on earth couldn't the update do everything it needed to do last night? Why leave a bunch of stuff to do when I try and log in and want to use my computer in the morning?

2) The only "exciting new feature" I can see is that the start menu no longer works and none of my programs show on the taskbar... More of a major annoyance really. Time to do a lot of googling to try and fix it I guess.

EDIT: A reboot solved issue (2) above. I still think they need to work on the upgrade experience though...

Settings.... Update would have shown yesterday that an update and restart was scheduled and there would/ should have been a notification sent to the action centre. On the settings screen you would have been able to deal with how the schedule update was handled.

I make it a habit of checking settings update on a regular basis to avoid surprises and potential pain.

This is sensible but I object to the need to do so. The Microsoft philosophy seems to be to try to force customers into seeing things their way, rather than trying to provide features customers actually want. I have disabled updates completely (is that what they wanted?) after getting sick of losing work due to their 'surprises'. I now re-enable updates from time to time when I think about it and find it convenient rather than when Microsoft thinks I should.

No doubt it did, and I was fine with it updating during the night last night so I would have left it to do its thing - what I don't understand is why it doesn't complete the update for all users when it does the update during the night. Instead when you try to log in the next morning it spends another 20 minutes finishing doing whatever it needed to do. My computer was on all night - why not update completely for all users on the computer during that time...?

4 Year old Samsung Laptop doesn't have very good drivers for Windows 10 or 8, so im stuck with 7. Otherwise performance is bad (especially graphics) scroll lag, video lag, videos don't play etc
