Anyone know how to get the mouse to stop jamming in the corner of the monitor when moving between screens. Really getting annoying now I have 3 at the same height.

More details please:

  • Do you mean at the top, bottom or both?
  • Are you using virtual desktops?
  • Are the monitors all the same vertical resolution?
  • Are you sharing the mouse with more than one system?

I can only find a slowdown when moving between monitors with different dimensions e.g. from Full HD to HD which doesn't extend down to the same pixel position.

In the past, I have seen a small slowdown through the notification area (previously called the system tray) of the task bar but can't see it on my system. Maybe that was related to Windows 8.

both 1080px high, its at the top, where the X is on a maximized window on the left screen, or the window menu is on the right screen. Seems about the top half of the window title bar will catch the pointer which is super annoying when I am aiming for the x on the left screen from the right screen. Also dragging windows around seems to catch at the edges of screens sometimes inorder to do the snapping to the side of the screen thing. Ugh so annyoying to have things dick with the mouse sensitivity and relationship to the pointer.

I got a similar problem on about the 50th and 51st attempts moving between screens. The mouse pointer caught in the top left corner over the Window close properties then the top right corner over the Window close button. For me, it happens if I'm within the zone at the top of the screen. From memory, in Windows 8 the zone was something like 6 pixels but I couldn't find the web page that explained about it. Will have another look another day.

As you've noticed, dragging Windows is different than moving the mouse/touch pointer. Windows Snap displays a ripple when the dragged window is at the edge of the screen. But I'm not having any delay dragging to a new Window. So is your PC CPU old or slow so the delay you notice is processing related?

No, not old or slow. A thought came to me that there may be something with dragging windows since the outer 2 monitors are only 60Hz so it might be as the mouse transitions between different refresh rates. Not about to go buying 2 more gaming monitors to see if that helps tho ;)

amiga500:

Installing an older HP printer is harder in Windows 10 than it was with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.    If I remember rightly if you had an older HP Inkjet printer Windows 95 would instantly recognise it or as a very similar model, & it would install automatically.

With Windows 10 I had to go to the HP website and download not just the driver but the full install package of about 190mb.     HP had the file listed in 2 places and the first download was corrupt.   It would only download properly when I did 'Save target as...'     It mentioned you could download just the driver but there was no link to that.

With Linux Ubuntu 14.04 or Mint 17.3  the printer is recognised instantly when you go to add printer & takes all of 30 seconds, and it's been that easy for years.    So why the heck can't Microsoft with all its vast resources of money and staff do a better job on simple stuff like this?

It's hard to comment about an unnamed printer but I've had a more normal experience.

Windows 8/10 automatically installs printer drivers for my older HP laser printers and a 3 year-old inkjet printer. The only issue has been that the default driver provided through Windows does not provide full support for the printer features I use, e.g. booklet printing, so I have to get the more complete driver from HP's support website anyway.

It was worse back in the days when Windows came on a disk with a standard set of printer drivers. That's why most printers had a compatibility mode: EPSON/IBM for dot matrix and LaserJet/PostScript for laser. From Windows 2000 we had the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) but I'm not sure where we find out what is available now.

Edit: A useful how to which shows what should happen

Thanks for the how to, maybe I did it the hard way!

Have you checked in the multi display settings of your graphics driver that the monitors are correctly aligned? in most of them you can drag/drop and rearrange, and if they don't line up right you will get something like you describe.

This here calls them sticky corners and says they cant be disabled - http://superuser.com/questions/947817/how-to-disable-sticky-corners-in-windows-10 - the annoying lag thing was to do with snapping apps to the sides of the screen, something I always use the windows key and arrows to do so is able to be turned off and sort that problem out.

Back to old printers -- Windows Central has a description of how to install an incompatible printer driver on Win 10.

http://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-non-compatible-printer-drivers-windows-10

I guess this might work for other incompatible drivers?

Oddly, this problem has self resolved.

Coincidentally ... my security software was getting to the end of it's subscription period, was frequently generating pop ups, warnings, etc and was consistently near the top of the CPU usage list.

After I updated my subscription all the annoy-ware obviously stopped, the security software is using negligible CPU resource and the MP4 playback problem has gone away.

Go figure ...

MikeAqua:

I've had a problem pop up with video playback.  After about 10 minutes of playing back 1080 videos on my SP1 they go to slow motion.  This happens in WMP and the video app and with vidoe form several different sources.

Suggests to me that it's a system issue.

I'm playing from an SD card, but that isn't an issue with the same files on my SP3.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or it really was likely to have been the security software ...

No sarcasm intended. It really is a classic AV related type issue.

Along the lines of 'my game slows down at random times'.

Could be something else entirely and not this at all, but there we go. : ).

My little 5c,

So i got used to the software now and i quite like it, It feels more natural than 8.1. (By a huge margin) Definitely less buggy.

Installed a SSD into my laptop in the M.2 slot. Runs like a cut cat i must say.

Hopefully someone can help here, I Have a genuine 8.0 Pro licence so i upgraded to windows 10... They gave me Windows 10 home. WTF..
