When Windows 10 became available I waited 3 months and finally decided to upgrade. Alas it's been a nightmare for me. The screen flickers constantly, programmes close without warning (or just will not open), Edge works sometimes, and often I get the "not responding" message. I have not added any extras (apps/programmes) to my computer (except Opera in an effort to find a browser that works consistently). I've been on Microsoft Chat Assistance (best they could do was offer me an upsell to buy a maintenance programme). I've written to Microsoft forums (apparently my problems are not uncommon). I've tweeked and twirked but still no fix.

I struggle daily with these problems - none of which happened before I upgraded. It's like they (Microsoft) have given me a free gift that has turned into an elephant in my office.

I have a feeling because the rest of the world is fine and I'm the only one with issues (yes I do), it must be a hardware/driver problem. You see when Win 10 start to become like Android - one overseeing control freak big brother OS loaded onto infinite hardware configurations (vs a Mac say) you are going to see Android type problems where really weird things happen. That's exactly what we're seeing.

So i got used to the software now and i quite like it, It feels more natural than 8.1. (By a huge margin) Definitely less buggy.

Installed a SSD into my laptop in the M.2 slot. Runs like a cut cat i must say.

Hopefully someone can help here, I Have a genuine 8.0 Pro licence so i upgraded to windows 10... They gave me Windows 10 home. WTF..

did your machine come with Windows 8 Home?

Hi Nathan, Thanks for your interest. Yes it is an Acer Desktop 23 inch previously with Windows 8 Pro. Now it's Windows 10 Pro. It's quite basic but I like it. No counterfeit programmes installed. Only used Windows Defender as an anti Virus (some problems caused by Norton). It almost seems like there is not enough cache when I have 3/4 windows open and am opening photo files or folders with lots of docs and it needs to check all the docs/photos first before being properly open so while it is checking the pics or files it flickers. This flickering is like a strobe and is beginning to do weird things to my head

I've been resisting the upgrade to Windows 10 even though I'm really keen to try it.

Why?

Because of the issues so many people seem have after the upgrade. I don't want to have to spend hours trouble shooting to get it right.

I suspect you're right when you say driver problem.

Recently my wife had a problem on her desktop, running Win 7 Professional, with Power Point, where the slide preview panes weren't displaying properly. A Google search suggested the driver for the video card might need updating.

Using Device Manager I checked the driver status and was told it was up to date. I then went onto NVidia's website and lo and behold the driver is out of date. Driver updated, problem solved. I suspect the flickering screen referred to above is a driver issue.

Windows doesn't always do a good job of determining whether or not drivers are up to date. Sorting out driver issues can be a real lottery as it's not always apparent from the symptoms what driver is at fault, in order to know what driver to update.

I know a few very untechy people who have upgraded to ten with no issues. Our own three machines had no problems. But do a system image so if it does go south you can get your system back. There are a few free software recommendations on Geekzone to do that- Macrium reflect is one a lot of people use.

I admit we only bothered to do a disk image backup on the laptop that's my main PC; I would have done an OS re-install on the other ones via optical disk or disk image if they needed it, there was nothing unreplacable on them. My laptop has some software on it that takes a long time to install. :p

We recently did 4 computer upgrades from 8 to 10.

One of the laptops did run out of battery during the upgrade (mrs didn't realise the power switch on the wall was off) but when power was restored the upgrade process reverted and restarted then completed without any issues.

None of the other machines had any issues whatsoever.

#1 I have issues on my 2 old PCs that I use for expendable things, like connecting to arduinos incase I toast them. With the crap AMD onboard that is no longer supported, on HDMI out there is underscan and the stupid AMD catylist software to fix this absurd default will not install. Had to swap monitors around for an older one with DVI that doesn't have the problem.

#2 Installing on the shed PC that I only have remote access too (since I took its monitor for #1) left me with inaccessable PC, the install had removed the network card drivers and stuff that put the computer on the correct tagged VLAN, and also ended up setting it to public since it came back with DHCP on a different network so I couldnt get into it without taking a monitor out to the shed and plugging it in and re-configuring the network.

#3 Garage PC went horribly wrong and ended up not booting after the downloadable update program had started. Had to make a bootable USB and use that to start it up, and then it was happy to continue with the install. There was traces of multiple booting linux still on that drive. Its my remaining spinning rust OS drive machine so really shouldn't have bothered with the update, but wanted to get in on the free before it expired in case I do get a proper OS drive for it and then want to update the hardware in the case at some stage to something from this side of 2010.

Oh the other thing to do is google your PC model and see if there are any reported specific issues. And check with the update app to see if IT reports any issues. And if you have any vital software, google it too...

Yup, Might have to. I PM'd Nathan before so ill see what he says as i gave him more info, Ill also let them know my HWID has changed so they need to move my Office licence too haha...

Yup, Might have to. I PM'd Nathan before so ill see what he says as i gave him more info, Ill also let them know my HWID has changed so they need to move my Office licence too haha...

I've always been able to get licensing and upgrade issues resolved over the phone. Over the years Microsoft have always provided me with good support by their standard phone numbers.

NVidia gives us driver updates that we load onto WU once they have high enough quality and reliability

I have been running 10 on 3 machines since it went GA and it's been fine. No issues at all. I would add I don't play games but just dot the usual web surfing and Office and Adobe.

But the biggest success so far (and I guess it would have worked with 8.1 also) is helping a friend who runs a legacy lawyer's case management system which is not supported on anything above XP but sort of runs on Windows 7. I purchased an Intel UMPC with Core i3, 8GB RAM and 120GB SSD, put Windows 8.1 Pro on it and it immediately offered the 10 upgrade which I accepted.

Then added Hyper-V as a new Windows feature, created a VM and installed XP in that VM. Went pretty smoothly apart from initially not finding a network card until I realised I had to add a legacy network card to the VM and also a Virtual Switch. XP runs pretty quickly in the VM and he can do all his other stuff on 10.

Nice solution to the problem as my other choice was to have the old software run on another PC in the office and he RDP to it when required.

I went to the Dell site and it says my laptop is not supported by Dell for Windows 10. They are not developing Win 10 drivers etc. Looks like I need to stick to Win 7 after all.
