As the technician suggested, I was able to make an install DVD from that, which I successfully installed and activated this morning using my (legitimate) product key.

Where did you download it from?

I have read before of non genuine versions of windows (made out to be just copies) being infected with deep-rooted spyware, including keyloggers etc.. This will not be picked up by your normal ant-virus and anti-spyware programs.

Personally I would never trust a OS downloaded from a third party website. But thats just me..

This is such a bad, bad, bad idea. Basically you are installing the operating system without knowing the source of the files - which could mean they come already "patched up" with all sorts of trojan, bot, rootkits, malware. About 1/3 of "leaked" Windows 7 came out infected with all sorts of malware.

And since this is installed before any AV or antispyware pretty much it's guaranteed your PC will never ever be clean or trustworthy.

Upgraded from Windows 7 64bit Ultimate last night, install went through without any major issues.

My only problem was that the 2/@ key on my keyboard was no longer working. Could not type in any email addressed. I Checked and installed new win 8 updates and that sorted out the problem.

Would like to upgrade my wifes 32bit Windows Vista Laptop too. But will look into that only if its possible to upgrade to 64bit (clean install).

So far I don't think I like the new start screen. It does not seem to be compatable with other applications and I don't really see the point. What happened to multitasking? I like a big desktop, and the benefit of having multiple applications spread out across the screen. Even two screens. Not interested in having a full screen for messaging, another one for email etc ... A full screen for skype!!

Going to be looking into installing an app which apparently returns the start menu.

Still waiting for my Windows 8 Media Center key too ...

I installed RTM downloaded from MS.

I presume that's ok.

Very surprised that your legit product key worked on that install though?

The RTM is a 90 day license and MS says cannot be upgraded to Win 8 once available??

I purchased the upgrade online yesterday on a w7 64bit machine, the upgrade runs until it gets to 29% then fails... no further details it just says windows installation has failed.

I have turned off antivirus
run chkdsk /r /f\
run sfc /scannow
Uninstalled NVidia update (this is supposed to also help)

Has anyone else had this issue?

On a positive note , i did get my media centre key... i just wish I could use it!!

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Because I got a new laptop a couple of months ago, I got the chance to register for a discounted version of Win8 (I think it's about $20US) and they sent me my discount code today. I've run the compatibility check via the upgrade assistant and so far the main issues are my antivirus (thanks McAffee) and the bluetooth aren't compatible, but all my important video editing programmes are.

I'm still sitting on the fence about doing the upgrade right away, though. Would I be better to wait a month or so for any kinks to be ironed out?

I finally got mine to work by trying all the following; not sure which worked or if it was just a fluke, but might be worth trying:

1) Freeing up more HDD space. The first couple of times I was pretty close to the 20 gig limit. This time I freed up over 50gig.

2) Turning off antivirus

3) deffragging the target drive

4) Turning off everything else that was running in my system tray (steam, steam limited, citrix reciever, sugarsync, etc, etc)

5) using the USB media option instead of DVD I'd burned from ISO

Hmmm.. now to find out why all metro apps just display for a couple of seconds them disappear every time I try to open or switch to one.

Agree 100% with the spyware/trojan comments earlier. Bad idea.

If you really have to get the iso from an unknown source use Microsoft's FCIV to generate an SHA1 and compare that to the SHA1 on Microsoft Developer Network (details).

SHA1 collisions are far beyond the reach of spyware/trojan/botnet operators to say the least.

Currently downloading Win 8 RP for the 3rd time. Downloaded 32-bit using Safari for Mac and the SHA1 matched. Downloaded 64-bit TWICE using Safari and both times the SHA1 did NOT match. Strangely, the SHA1 for both the 64-bit versions was the SAME but did not match that supplied for that download.

All downloads were direct from MS links.

Downloading 64-bit using IE on a PC now. Not sure why it would make any difference when directly downloading an ISO file??

Well upgraded to Win 8 20 minutes to download wow fast not a clean install did it over Win 7 had no problem took a couple of hours had same problem with the @ key so changed my keyboard to NZ English after finding the @ key all fixed, ATI Catalyst error on start ups so reinstalled drivers for it still no good couldn't see it causing it any problems so have left it for now and ticked the don't show this message again will fix at a later date hopefully.
Downloaded Classic Start Menu awesome free program now have my start menu back until I get used to Win 8 but I now have the best of both worlds Win 7desktop and Win 8 metro .
Downloaded Windows Media Center key took about 5 minutes to receive so I can watch Freeview at work plugged in usb stick TV tuner, tuned in the programs using WMC as software that my Pinnacle tuner came with never really worked no problem always tune with WMC and better picture so now I'm a happy chappy oh while I was at it finally got round to Partitioning hard drive using EaseUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition then used Windows Disk Manager to format unallocated space so now have photos and music movies on G: drive so if I format my hard-drive if Win 8 crashes or I uninstall it everything I don't have to move anything,it,s all backed on another drive anyway.

Installed Win 8 Pro on three computers yesterday/today using retail upgrade packs for Win 7 to win 8 pro.
(wanted the dvd's)
Upgraded, copying system settings, personal settings, files, apps, etc from win 7

Only had one problem with Avast, real time shields wouldn't start after the install had completed on each computer. A repair install in the Win 8 control panel fixed that. This is the latest version of Avast that is (supposedly) win 8 compatible.

Working my way through all the programmes on each computer seeing what works and what doesn't, so far everything works the same as it did on Win 7.

IMHO, win 8 is really win 7 service pack 2. ;-)

When you run these they load up in the desktop. If for example I run Firefox, my browser of choice, from the new start menu it loads up in the desktop and looks and feels exactly as if I was in windows 7 When I click the X in the top right to exit the program where does it leave me? Still in the desktop! To get back to start I have to either hover in the lower left or the top right and choose start.

Pressing the Windows key on your keyboard (if it has one) also toggles between the 'Metro/Start' screen and the desk top.
