yep excellent value. I tried the preview and had couple of minor issues but this final is excellent. I never thought I would like the tiles and didn't use them on the preview. Now that I have actually upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, I thought I may as well get used to them. Well I prefer the Tiles now. I love the Tiles and wont go back. I love it so much I have pre ordered a Windows 8 tablet.

This upgrade for $49.99 is excellent value to upgrade.

Not entirely how I did this but I got three vouchers from Microsoft to redeem against Windows 8. I bought the $49.99 download but when I applied the voucher the price dropped to $19 so that was a nice surprise. I think I will buy three and get three copies of MCE. Got two already via email.

I agree. I'm running W8 Pro on a 6 year old laptop that didn't even support W7 (HP NX9420, 2.17GHz, 4Gb Ram, 32 bit, XP Pro - W7 Ultimate - W8 Pro). It's running quite smooth and was a painless install. I actually quite like the metro side of things, especially the tiles and search function. Have already got chrome and google search back, as well as Windows Media Centre thanks to Mauricio's tweet the other day. I have 4 different CAD programs (am a student) installed, none of which have had even the slightest hiccup.

As an added bonus the firmware for my built-in card reader never accepted SDHC cards, despite many different attempts. With W8 it works perfectly. Finally.

I never expected it to go so smoothly, or to like the metro interface so am very happy with W8 so far. Best $50 ever spent on an OS, exceptional value.

No. Besides the fact my main OS is Linux, when I need to use Windows I will stick with 7

Scenario:
I have 1 of 3 licenses of an Office 2010 Home and Student 3-user product on my current Win 7 machine.
I would like to transfer this license to a new Windows 8 clean install on my same machine.

Question:
Will this be possible?
If so, what's the best way to go about it? Uninstall current license from current Win7 machine? Will this effectively 'free-up' one of the licenses to be used on the new/clean Win 8 install on the same machine? Is the Office install/uninstall system smart enough to de-register each instance of the 3 installs available when one uninstalls from a machine?
Will it not even matter, as the hardware ID (I assume this is what Office uses to register installs) will be the same?

BTW, not interested in doing an upgrade over the current Windows 7 install. I always like to start fresh with a new OS.

I ran the installation Wizard without installing and the only issue it raised was my monitor (1280x1024) isn't high enough to support Snap. I don't think that is a big issue but at the moment there is no burning bridge for me to upgrade.

However at work I might look at the Windows 8 tablets with pens (Wacom or similar) to replace iPads which are just so hard to integrate into the corporate network.

VIStart is another free start menu option (uncheck the extra crap during install) http://lee-soft.com/

I would still recommend installing and running windows 8 *WITHOUT* using a start menu replacement for a week. See if you still think you need a replacement after a week. Like many new things, it can take a couple of days to get used to, then once you do get used to it you wonder what all the fuss was in the first place.

Its not just about the start menu. Windows 8 has other benefits too, better security, and better performance like a faster boot time ... You still get these benefits if you don't use the new start menu.

I was thinking what would be the #1 feature that would make me swap to Windows 8 in a beat... And I thought it would be "Performance Improvements over Windows 7 on same hardware".

There are plenty of performance reviews - most of those based on CTP releases. I found the most recent one though from Ars Technica "Gentlemen, start your benches: Measuring Windows 8's performance.

Basically it seems there is no performance gains when using same hardware. The real gain is on boot time, because when turning off Windows 8 saves OS stacks and reuse then during the next boot, similar to hibernate.

It is probably something good for me, as I tend to shutdown my PCs at night instead of using sleep. But not much gain after that, really...
