LABCAT: Hi there,

I have been reading this thread and found it very informative so I signed up to see if I can find some answers for questions I have.

What are the physical memory limits of the different versions of 8?

I am looking at buying a system that has windows 8 installed, however I have windows XP and activation code so could buy the system without the operating system and instal then upgrade to windows 8 pro.

What are the differences between windows 8 and windows 8 pro? Any reccomendations?

- Um more memory than what you have in your machine unless you run the 32bit version of Windows 8

How much RAM do you have?

- Windows 8 Pro includes Bitlocker Drive encryption and a bunch of other IT Pro features including domain join to Active Directory. More relevant for Home users is you can add Windows Media Centre to it (the NZ$49.99 includes the right to get a free MCE key)

Basically if you run Windows 8 64 bit then you shouldn't have to worry about memory limits for home use - and even for business use it will be a higher limit in the Pro version:

Windows 8: 128GB RAM
Windows 8 Professional: 512GB RAM

Don't go there. You won't find a system without Windows unless you buy the parts and build it yourself. Just buy one with Windows 8 pre-installed. The price difference won't be that much.

Is there a geekzone app to replace the geekzone gadget. Or can you run the gadget If so how ?

There isn't a Geekzone app at the moment. I don't think there's a Gadget platform on Windows 8 though. We stopped promoting the gadget as it seems the Windows Gadget platform wasn't 100% secure for the users.

Correct Gadgets are deprecated from Windows 8 due to security.

Spoke to the supplier and its $10 cheaper to get it with windows 7 and then I can just get the $20 upgrade to pro so I'll probably take that option.

If I buy an activation key online can I use my friends upgrade disc and avoid the large download?

OK. Made the leap to Windows 8 just now.

It comes with Windows Defender installed and running by default. This is all good.
My understanding is that it is the Security Essentials equivalent for Windows 8, so there is no need to install Security Essentials. This is also good.

There's one thing that is puzzling me, though.
There doesn't seem to be an option to set a scheduled scan (Quick or Full). WTF?
Perhaps there isn't really a need for a regular scan anymore, as most things may be caught by the real-time background scanner? Maybe it is considered 'old school' to be running scheduled scans now?
Still seems like a weird decision to remove the option to set up a scheduled scan.

do one full scan.. and thats it

new file, changes etc will be scanned automagically. this eliminates the need for 'regular' scanning

It is caused by the Logitech Webcam software. Uninstalled that and, bingo, problem went away.

Tried uninstalling the logitech software, it did not solve the problem.

Turns out its the Avast antivirus shield thats causing the problem.

For those seeking a manual fix for this issue until Avast sorts it out, this is what I did to get it working:
- Open up the Avast user interface.
- Click on "Real-Time Shields", and then on "Behavior Shield"
- Click the "Expert Settings" button.
- Click on the "Trusted Processes" tab.
- Find all instances of "WWAHost.exe" on your computer, and add it to this list.

I just uninstalled the Avast antivirus. There seems no point using it anymore on Windows 8.

I didn't know this, should i not be using them in windows 7, I just have network, hard drive, gpu and cpu meters and the weather one.
