The fast track threw up 10061 build today but I backed out of that and stayed with 10049. Too many bugs
with 10061

KiwiNZ: Too many bugs

Do you mean the known issues list as per the blog:

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/04/22/windows-10-technical-preview-build-10061-now-available/

or are there others too?

Yes these, after reading all these known issues I decided to stay on 10049 in the short term

Hmmm, good choice. It's not noted in the known issues but the mail client seems borked if you need to connect to an exchange server with increased security requirements\policy - it just keeps prompting to 'make your pc more secure' over and over but never works. looks like i'm not the only one having the issue but still quite annoying.

semigeek: Does anyone know why I can't update to 10049 on Fast? I have tried about 4 times now,  it downloads the update, and then tries to install, but 9 hours or so later it still hasn't completed. Trying to install on a Compaq C700 laptop.  10041 works fine. Sometimes 10049 update will blue screen at about 30% installation as well, though it takes hours to even get to 30%.
Any solutions to the problem would be great.

Had that problem with 10049 on one PC .  In the finish I downloaded the ISO and did an update from that .  Worked fine..

Installing 10049 per WUS takes an eternity as it installs a huge amount of language packs and it can't be avoided. So yes if you want a faster install D/L an ISO and do a custom install

CAUTION if you install on the quick release schedule there is a HUGE known bug in 10061:

Here are some known issues for this build

  • We know this one will be a bit painful but there is a bug with this build in which Win32 (desktop) apps won’t launch from the Start menu. The workaround is to use search to find and launch these apps and pin them to your taskbar for quick access.
  • The Windows Store Beta (grey tile) and Project Spartan get unpinned after upgrading. You can re-pin them to your Taskbar from All apps on your Start menu.
  • The version of the Mail and Calendar apps included in this build (17.4008.42281.0) have a known issue that causes every typed letter to appear twice. Which might be funny if it weren’t so irritating. We have fixed this issue with updated versions of the apps (17.4016.42291.0) available in the Windows Store Beta (grey tile). If you don’t open the Mail and Calendar apps within the first 15 minutes after logging in to your device for the first time after upgrading and your device is connected to the Internet, the apps should update automatically. You can also go into the Store Beta and check for updates manually at any time.
  • Cortana will highlight things it will be able to help users with, but some of these features are not yet implemented and we are working to deliver them soon.
  • There is a known issue where you might see a black screen with only your mouse cursor during login/logout. We have a fix for this coming via WU.
  • Downloading music in the Xbox Music and Music Preview apps is currently broken. We also have a fix for this coming via WU.
  • When you minimize an app playing audio, it may stop playing once its minimized.
  • In Project Spartan, no selection highlight appears when selecting text in the address box. You can right click in the address box to cut/copy/paste and it will work as expected. We also have a fix for this coming via WU.
  • Magnifier does not work when you put it into docked mode. We will also have a fix for this coming via WU.

I cannot for the life of me understand putting out a release with bug #1 is present, surely you would wait a week longer and fix it. This along with the fact the start menu is still very broken, worries me. There is still plenty of time till release, but I think MS would be better to push the delivery of W10 by 3 months and take some of the pressure off themselves. '

Compared to the state of some of their prior OS's at this stage of release and testing, W10 feels behind. I'd rather not see another Window release marred by sub par experiences.

It is a technical preview for testing and fixing. That said I will probably install 10061 in a week or two

Yes I am well aware of the limitations of beta's, I have been testing windows (and in fact hundreds of bits of software) since their very first version, but the first bug and the ongoing start menu bugs, it would seem better to me be to delay the beta releases and release a more complete test version than one which will affect so many people negatively.

As someone stated in a blog, the days of skipping release notes for new versions of windows, are over, as these notes above, also come with some work arounds which would save a lot of people some serious time in troubleshooting.

to be pedantic, these are not beta releases.

A tech preview is more akin to alpha - as in stuff will be broken, which I assume you know.

They are making massive fundamental changes to how the start menu works, it is going to break.

People wanted access to builds as they became available - they got it.

I like this build a lot, much more polished than the last.  Like search in start menu looks nicer, brightness is adjustable now from quick settings.  Lots of bugs but design wise better.

It is why they have the fast and slow tracks, if someone does not want to have a potentially broken release they can opt for the slow track and receive them when they have some of the bugs ironed out.

Yeap Win32 apps don't launch from Start menu but launch fine from search
