macuser: Just picked up a HP Envy x2 convertible tablet/laptop a week or so ago. Windows 8 shines on this device. Having the touchscreen in a laptop environment is actually killer, you can just grab the screen and scroll.

I now find myself more and more often trying to touch the screen of my 17" Dell, also running Windows 8. A split second before I touch it I remember that it isn't.

I think before people hate on 'chimp' arm too much, spend a week or so with a touchscreen laptop running Windows 8. It's actually super great.

I don't understand wanting to move your entire arm/shoulder to achieve what can be done with a mouse with a minute hand movement. I've tried Touchscreens. We have a few customers who tried it and thought it was magic for a week or so and then realized what a waste of energy it was.

I see Physios making a lot of money from this.

scuwp: Is it just me or is there a pattern here:

Win Xp - Great!
Win Vista - Crap!
Win 7 - Great!
Win 8 - Crap!
Win 9 - ????

I for one would seriously put off buying a new PC as long as I could because of Win 8. Not surprising that others are doing the same.

Will add to this

Windows 98 SE Great
Windows ME Crap

I believe all of those bad releases had one bad thing in common. BUGS!!!

With windows 8, and although I really don't like Metro I still have not come across any major bugs. It has yet to crash on me. The same could not be said about ME/Vista.

boby55: I've never come across a program that has forced me to use a metro app over a traditional desktop app, And I uninstalled all the "Common" live apps e.g sports, weather..

if you type in "Update" the metro windows update app starts. there are other like some control panel/network stuff that is the same.

I like switching network on/off if you need to restart your wifi for any reason.

but generally I never use any metro apps on my desktop/laptop and hate it when they open (pdf viewer etc) when I didn't want to use them.  so turning them off completely should be allowed.

Surprised None of my Control Panel items open as Metro apps ever, including Windows Update. In fact I have never seen a Metro version of any of them - didn't know they even existed. And I am never forced to use nor offered a Metro app over a desktop one, including for pdfs. So I don't know what you are using or doing wrong.

If you don't want to use Metro apps just uninstall them, which, unsurprisingly, has the same effect as turning them off.

if i type "update" and press enter in the start menu/screen i get a metro app, same with network.  first thing i did when getting a new computer was run windows update.

uninstalling them is a ugly solution.

Jeeze, physios must be making a killing off iPads and every modern smartphone then also.

I'm not talking about using a touch screen exclusively, I'm talking about using it to suppliment mouse and keyboard.

Yea there are a few that default to Metro.
Importing pictures for example is a pain because the default option was the metro app. But I turned that off.

I have been using Windows 8 now since the $49.00 upgrade offer. I have found metro to be really nice sometimes but at the same time irritating. I have finally come to the conclusion that Windows 8 is near perfect.

My only complaint now with the OS is that one does not have the option to turn off Metro.

Metro is definitely not for the desktop. Why MS forces it onto desktop users I don't know.

For a laptop, maybe. Each person will be different. Some will use it some will not. Personally I would not.

It depends on what you are doing. Try changing the picture for your account from Control Panel. It's no longer there, it's only in the Metro version.

Go to Control Panel | Users | Manage another account. The option to add a new PC user now will take you to the Metro app. The alternative is to use Computer Management to drill down to users and create from there.

At some you will get the Metro app in front of you.

HAHA.
I loved Windows 95. It was a big step forward from 3.1.

In fact the OS was so popular that soon after the launch of Windows 95 Microsoft's sales overtook Apple for the first time.

Put a tile for Control Panel on the Start Page (I haven't a default setup here but easy way is probably just type "Control Panel" while in the Start Screen and then pin it to Start). Then try typing Update on the Start Page and see what happens - Metro or traditional Update? Despite claims one is not forced to use the Metro style control panel.

Re the ugly bit - you mean that if you have applications on your PC you think uninstalling them is "ugly". Do you have "turning off switches" for your desk to apps - No, so you must regard that ugly too.

I think my issue with Windows 8 and right now MS In general is the arrogant stand they have taken where they appear to no longer be taking feedback and or if you disagree with the decisions they make or the direction they are heading you get mocked or called out as being "old fashioned" or "out of date" or "not with it".

If I wanted vendors with that sort of attitude, I could migrate to Apple products and have no choices and complete disregard for my opinion.

It seems there has been a shift at MS in their attitude which allowed them to put their hand up over products like Vista and say "Hey we didn't do as well as we should have, we are sorry and we will do better". The MS of that time frame were much easier to work with in my opinion. During that time we felt as MS were a partner to us rather than what is currently the feeling among the resellers I have spoken, where it's more a dictatorship. It's discouraging.

I don't say this to be disrespectful, there are MS employees here who are helping people and doing some good things.

indeed eventually your normal non touch screen will feel broken since you can't interact with it

For some very few settings that are NOT in Control Panel but are in PC Settings, you can change them in PC Settings either by going to PC Settings oneself (e.g. from the right margin Gearwheel) or if the functionality is not in Control Panel Control Panel offers a link to it in PC Settings. Clicking User Accounts in Control Panel does not take you to a Metro version of User Accounts and there is no Metro (Modern) version of Control Panel itself that I am aware of.

If people are fussed over that then it would seem to me that their concerns are trivial.
