macuser: Just picked up a HP Envy x2 convertible tablet/laptop a week or so ago. Windows 8 shines on this device. Having the touchscreen in a laptop environment is actually killer, you can just grab the screen and scroll.
I now find myself more and more often trying to touch the screen of my 17" Dell, also running Windows 8. A split second before I touch it I remember that it isn't.
I think before people hate on 'chimp' arm too much, spend a week or so with a touchscreen laptop running Windows 8. It's actually super great.
I don't understand wanting to move your entire arm/shoulder to achieve what can be done with a mouse with a minute hand movement. I've tried Touchscreens. We have a few customers who tried it and thought it was magic for a week or so and then realized what a waste of energy it was.
I see Physios making a lot of money from this.

None of my Control Panel items open as Metro apps ever, including Windows Update. In fact I have never seen a Metro version of any of them - didn't know they even existed. And I am never forced to use nor offered a Metro app over a desktop one, including for pdfs. So I don't know what you are using or doing wrong.
