Just updated my Surface to 8.1.

Took about an hour (ish) to download and complete.

Nice having Outlook again so I don't have to use the stupid Modern email client. Which was just plain awful.

sbiddle: You're not the only person on the planet who thought downloading Windows 8.1 would be a great idea.

Also, don't assume your experience is the entire Internet's experience.  You are but one data point.

Updated around 9.30 this morning, everything went smoothly, nice how it only hassles you when it's time to restart

Downloading at a trickle rate in Hamilton. Started at ~8:30am and I've yet to get to 50%

Some comments (haven't had time to look much though) --

Start button -- not really a start button, it just brings up metro like before. Bleh!!

Windows 8.1 photo app -- I like to have slideshows running during the day. But microsoft still expect you to have all of your photos in 1 single folder -- they don't allow the slideshow to navigate subfolders. Who stores all their photos in one folder?

Why on earth wouldn't they at least have a setting to allow subfolders? One of their billion programmers could have thought of this rather useful thing.

There is actually no really good slideshow program for pc's anywhere. I want itunes type 'photo' smart playlists.

Anyway, on the brief look I had, I still don't like 8.1 - it doesn't seem overly changed . I will investigate more and maybe I am completely wrong and there is a hidden windows 7 emulation mode :)

MaxLV: Trying to download Windows 8.1 through the online store. (only way you'll get it)

Been running for an hour now and it's only downloaded 10%!!!!!

Best download speed I'm getting from my 100Mbit/sec connection is 20 - 50 Kbits second!!!!

WTF in Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to distribute a 2.8GB update to windows 8 by the Online store?????

Should sack the idiot!!!!

ROTFLMAO

what irony eh

Downloaded and installed on my desktop and RT in about an hour. Can't see a whole lot of changes apart from the obvious store update and split screen, but liking it so far

Any of you who have upgraded, had you previously moved your Users folder off your C: partition? This seems to stop the upgrade happening.

Odd, when I check the store I get a large "Update Windows" as the main item but the picture in it says "Windows 8.1 preview" - When I click on it though it seems to be the 8.1 update with no mention of preview in sight...

Hmm.. just updated and it seems like there is a watermark at the bottom right hand that says:

Windows 8.1 Pro
SecureBoot isn't configured correctly
Build 9600

I have double checked the bios settings and SecureBoot IS on! Not sure what the problem is?

Will continue to do a Google search in the meantime...

I wonder why they don't have it in the windows updates section. I never use the app store, so would have missed it.
