Trying to download Windows 8.1 through the online store. (only way you'll get it)

Been running for an hour now and it's only downloaded 10%!!!!!

Best download speed I'm getting from my 100Mbit/sec connection is 20 - 50 Kbits second!!!!

WTF in Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to distribute a 2.8GB update to windows 8 by the Online store?????

Should sack the idiot!!!!

I grabbed the volume licensed 64 bit Pro *.iso of roughly 3.5GB at the full 6Mb/s my connection can achieve. So maybe not all locations are getting hammered. Edit: and those that are would be being cached by CDNs in short order I'd imagine? Not sure how the store is distributed.

Unplug any USB device you have connected to your PC during the update. Also make sure all existing drivers are up to date.

I've gotten used to win8, and rather gotten used to lack of a start menu etc; some of the admin side still a PIA but upgrading has been more painful then pulling teeth out(ok maybe an exaggeration, but still painful)

  • very very slow, started last night downloading the upgrade on my surface pro, and as of now still only at around 40%
  • multiple downloads for multiple systems running windows 8 (this is very much a pain on a capped internet connection) i.e. i have 3 computers my main desktop, surface (love this tablet), and hp laptop, each system is downloading just around 2.5gb each for an upgrade; what ever happened to single download and multiple upgrade paths MS stuffed this one up

out of curiosity is MS Store cached via Akamai ?

Damn, only 0.4GB left on my data cap this month, guess I'll be waiting 2 days before getting it.

Other than having to go through the http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/buy site to get it to pop up on the store it seems to be downloading fine here. Hate to think how much the windows store servers are being hit.

how do you get it for free.  I try and it insists on charging me $499.  I am running Windows 8 Pro.  I wont upgrade to 8.1 at that price

I was on the preview so it picked this up and gave me a how to upgrade to RTM which gave this link.

ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade

I think if you put this into the metro IE that it will take you to the upgrade item in the store.

To be completely honest I have one thing to say - Take a chill pill.

You're not the only person on the planet who thought downloading Windows 8.1 would be a great idea. You only need to look at the impact the recent iOS7 update had on bringing the internet to a crawl to realise the impact such major updates have.

Windows 8.1 is a free upgrade.

It's available from the Store on your device. Make sure Windows is updated then it will show up in the Store.

Apparently they're doing a staggered rollout, so some people will see it, others not.

okay. still not showing up on my Samsung Tablet or my htpc.   Took 30 minutes downloading and it setting up which I thought was very quick.  Dont notice much difference from 8.0 so may not update the others. Have to play a bit on this one first but doesnt seem alot changed. Still not much customisation available on the tiles.
