freitasm: If I reserve a copy from the popup do I have to install it?

No, you can cancel your reservation at any time prior to installing Windows 10. Here’s how:

  • Right click on the Get Windows 10 app or Windows icon located in right end of the taskbar.
  • Select “Check your upgrade status”
  • Click the menu in the upper left corner, then select “View Confirmation.”
  • In the lower left, select “Cancel reservation.”

Thanks, but can I keep the reservation and install at my own leisure, or is the install automatic as soon as the files are downloaded?

You’ll get a notification on your PC or tablet when Windows 10 is ready to install.

Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29th, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.

You see a notification, and then from that notification you can choose to upgrade right then or schedule the upgrade for a time convenient for you.

@nathan, so your saying if i upgrade from 8.1 to 10 then my licence is stored in the cloud for future clean installs.

does it track the licence from the motherboard s/n or something else?

what if i was to change my hard disk or GPU then did a fresh install, would it still activate?

Cheers.

If it doesn't activate you call 0800 800 004 and do an offline activation, exactly like you can do today.

Nathan - given you say the upgrade process will need to confirm the current version of Windows running on a PC, can you advise how to do a clean install of Windows 10 from day one? (Ie, one that doesn't require an initial install of 10 over my current 8.1 install before then doing a clean install.) Can I download the files and install them onto a bootable USB stick before then doing a totally clean install? My PC is running like a dog since upgrading to 8, so I'd like to start with a blank slate, so to speak. Thanks!

Another question; is it NZ's 29th or US's 29th (which is roughly NZ's 30th)?

You will be able to clean install on July 29, you'll need to kick off the upgrade from your activated OS to get your free upgrade key

Then you can clean install.

I'd like to know this too. I've had to rebuild machines clean a few times, and their spec had changed from original activation - never had an issue, but interested to see if process has changed.

I can't go into the details of the exact specifics of how this works, hopefully for obvious reasons

But at the end of the day if you have changed enough of the hardware in your machine that it will no longer activate, you just call 0800 800 004 and you can do an offline activation rather than an online automatic activation

trig42:

If you change the key, and if you then run activation with the new key, and it activates, then it should be ok & check eligabilyt. Obviously this depends on activation and eliglbe check passing. Might be worth a try if a rebuild looks daunting.

nathan, thanks for answering all the questions

Seems to be a fair bit of confusion around regarding this "upgrade progress" - over the weekend (1st/2nd) I'll be updating my Windows 7 install to 10 and see if I like it
On another SSD I have my 8.1 install that I will also try to upgrade to 10, thereby hopefully securing 2 official activations (on the same hardware, on the same Microsoft account)

It may not work ..

I'm trying to answer the confusion :)

did you have 2 Windows activated genuine licenses before?

then you'll have 2 Windows 10 licenses.

So i have a Win 7 machine that I use for almost everything currently (email, browsing, video editing, games bla bla bla)

I also have a new machine that I intend to install a new purchased copy of Windows 10, this will take the role of the Win 7 machine.

I want to upgrade the Win 7 box to a FRESH, UNTAINTED copy of Windows 10 but after I have exported all the junk off it.

Can I avoid all the hassle of upgrading the Windows 7 install to Windows 10, the wiping it and using the upgrading offered key to install a fresh Win 10 install?

just want to avoid the pain of an upgrade and an install - I think this is the main question people are asking a simple answer to.
