Behodar: My latest question is around how to either check for app updates, or show a list of installed updates.
with anything you cannot immediately find how to do, click the start menu and start typing.  for example, for updates, type 'update' or to quickly give the correct result, type windows update. ditto for other control panel settings, for example typing 'proxy' gives results for adding what looks like a global proxy setting or the connections tab for IE settings.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Perthman: Installed 10 on two machines today - one used to run 7 and the other 8.1.  Has anyone noticed that in Control Panel under Backup and Restore there is a reference to Windows 7 - Backup and restore files created with Windows 7?  This appears on BOTH machines - even the 8.1 machine which has never had 7...  Strangley when I click on the link it advises me there are no files created under 7.

yes by design, you had this in windows 8/8.1 as well

freitasm: A couple of things...

  • Fingerprint login: I uninstalled the HP Security Client (as it should be uninstalled anyway) and have updated the fingerprint scanner driver in preparation for Windows 10 - Nathan mentioned before that it should just "work". I go into Account and there's no option for fingerprint login or enrollment.
  • Why is that some windows (mainly system windows such as Control Panel options and Settings options) open, close and open again?

remind me the hardware, and I'll grab one out of my cupboard and have a play see if I can get it working.

This is to give you access to the old Disc Image backup that existed in Windows 7 and was "hidden" in Windows 8.

Damn thing... Had PerfectDisk 13 running on Windows 8.1. No warning about having to remove it. After Windows 10 installed I found it doesn't run on this new OS version - but it won't run the uninstaller either.

Stupid developers.

Interesting. Using Outlook 2013 the hyperlinks with anchor tags (for example links to a specific reply on Geekzone) don't work anymore when going to Chrome. Works fine with Edge.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Also can't add a different search engine to Edge.

When I go to Manage WiFi Settings and click to "Forget" a wireless network the Settings window crashes/closes.

How do I get the backlight on my Surface Pro 3 to turn down/off?

It's locked on full and unless I shutdown the backlight is ALWAYS on. Even when its supposed to be asleep, the screen goes black, but the backlight is on.

Never mind, googling again after typing this, my screen went black, and it came right...

Computers certainly know how to wind me up.

Are you sure? Even by going to Settings/Advanced Settings?

I just changed mine to google.co.nz ->

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-nz/windows-10/change-the-default-search-engine-in-microsoft-edge

1.Go to the search engine's website.

2.Select More actions (…) > Settings > View advanced settings.  In the list under Search in the address bar with,  choose Add new.

3.Select the website, then select Add.
