a few things l learnt about win 11 behaviour on my laptop

- i was complaining of stutter recently, slow trackpad scrolling, just laggy and slow everything trackpad

turns out if i increase the sensitivity of the touchpad these things all go away! the scroll is smooth and more lines per movement, the click is instant, very snappy.

also i need to set the laptop to use nvidia GPU instead of intel integrated for even smoother screen (it's a 4k screen laptop)

now it's buttery smooth. almost. facebook on chrome is still not quite there. don't remember having this issue on a windows 10 laptop but it was 1080p.

but battery life .... umm .. non existent

One thing that annoys me is that if I right click on a file I have to then click on more options to get to copy. When I want to paste it's the reverse. It's a pain.

How did you do that? I know you can do on a app basis but not system wide.

[Edit] The latest NVIDIA Control Panel app has a dropdown to select which GPU to use by default but Windows itself only allows individual app control.

Good question. I set it on the nvidia settings. But I do notice that Windows has a per app only setting, maybe Windows settings overrides nvidia settings?

The apps that I found jittery I had already set them in Windows to use nvidia gpu which fixed the most of the lag /jitter.

So maybe I need to set chrome to nvidia to fix the Facebook troubles hmm

I have just edited my reply to mention "The latest NVIDIA Control Panel app has a dropdown to select which GPU to use by default but Windows itself only allows individual app control."

Do you not have the cut, copy, paste etc icons at the top of your right click context menu?

just got home, and checked it out.

yup nvidia settings does nothing.

gpu was all intel.

so i set it in windows to use nvidia ... it not as stable as intel graphics but performance is better. screen is flashing sometimes. nvidia control panel crashing every time i open.

go figure

edit - updated both sets of drivers ... nvidia not crashing now ... hopefully screen won't flash ...

i've gone back to intel. nvidia gives only very slight benefit but the laptop became a firepit.

I've been using Directory Opus since Win7. Hands down the best file manager I've ever used. Split screens, fully customisable.

Given windows 11 a whirl..... don't like it.

There are a few bugs,  but they'll be fixed one day....not so important to me.

But MS have made the GUI look prettier at the expense of functionality.

Many of the common actions in windows 10 that needed just 1 click,  now require 2 or more clicks.    And, that alone is enough to put me off. I'd say windows 11 is 3 to 4 times slower for commonly used actions like finding and opening windows.

I don't think this is something I'll get used to either. Windows 10 will always be faster than windows 11 because you need less clicking.

Windows 10 already required more clicks than earlier Windows releases, particularly when it came to system configuration. I'm pleased I'm no longer in a job where I needed to regularly reconfigure Windows systems.
